Bunbury is pretty good. There seems to be less heroes and douches. There is less of a city feel. Its where i grew up and i think i'm okay. *head twitch*
Its reasonably close to some good camping and 4wding. Plus dunsborough and busso and that are only an hr away, And Perth is only hr and half away. Perth will have more 4wd shops though, which is pretty handy i spose...150 VX diesel. Awesome bonnet protector! Monster Rides 3" Susp Lift, 265/70/17 MT MTZ's on Dick Cepek Torques, TJM T13 bar,TG150 Guard, Airtec Snorkel, Lightforce HID's, GME TX3540, CKMTA12 compressor, redarc dual bats, Drawers, fridgy drop slide, Maxtrax, More to come... one day!

Well to really answer this properly I would need to know ,What age is your family and what basic price of the housing you would be seeking.
I'm assuming you mean Perth in general.
Perth has a number of great schools scattered around the metro area and my decision to live in the Northern suburbs here was based on the social economic area and the quality of primary and high schools available .Private and Public.
The Northern Suburbs has a lot to offer in my opinion ,Around Joondalup is becoming more popular as the Universities has expanded and new training centers have been opened.Police academy ,Motor Trades Association ,and soon to be built a new electrical trade collage.Beaches are close ,The train and Freeway are at easy access and the Northern peek hour on the freeway is nothing compared to going South of Perth at peek hour.( Again nothing like eastern States peek hours)
Housing prices vary from suburb to suburb and pretty much go up as you get closer to the city and beaches.
Most of the newer suburbs have 4x2 houses or bigger and they are made from DOUBLE BRICK and not GYP-ROCK or plaster board like those eastern state houses.
If you live in the Northern Suburbs people from the South resent you as they know they made the wrong choice secretly .

For me Pilbara coastal communities have been a great place to raise a family with ready access to the great out doors, lots of camping, fishing and 4x4. During the early 2000's my kids enjoyed similar freedoms to what I had as a kid growing up in the late 60s and 70s but sadly that advantage seems to be disappearing.
Anecdotally, increases in state housing have led to increases of burglaries, car theft and common assult in recent years, maybe not as bad as the big smoke, but not what it was. The mining boom and the influx of fly-in-fly-out people has also, in my opinion, seen a dilution of community spirit and involvement and a huge increase in anti-social behaviour.
The Pilbara cities initiative offers the opportunity for the Pilbara to re-establih a great lifestyle but I don't believe we can rely on the mining industry to be part of this reinvention - profit before people is the new maxim despited what PR spin doctors might say.
The Pilbara is still a great place to be, and well worth while if a mining job offsets the extortive cost of living (like $2,000 per week rents and more) but otherwise I fear the dream has gone.
Cheers
John

Thanks for all the replies. The kids are 10, 13 and 14. We would be looking to rent first to settle in and get to know the various areas. Job wise shouldn't be too much of an issue however we will need to be close to Perth CBD for work. Probably a better question would have been, what are the areas to avoid? At this stage we are considering various options and feeling a bit stale in Sydney.Black 2003, TD, GXL Prado

Places to avoid any suburb sth of the River,as well as some on the North side - Mirrabooka,Straton,Lockridge,Girrawheen,Balga, some parts of Ballajura,Eden Hill,Ellenbrook are the suburbs I would not live in.Then you got Subiaco and Fremantle why would someone want to live in the home of the Eagles and Dockers

Try Manning! Close to river. It's a no through suburb, meaning drivers can drive through Manning but have to come back the same way to get out so you don't get many tourist drivers like many of the other river suburbs. You get river views as you drive in to the city along the freeway! You also get to start your journey south to the South West of WA 40-60 minutes before those living outer north, traffic permitting.
Approx. 11km to Freo, 8Km to Perth, 20-25km directly to the hills, 12km to airport, < 3-5km to Public Manning Primary and Como Senior High School, boys private school Aquinas College or girls Penrohs College and next to Curtin University.
Public transport, your in the 1 Zone region so fares are $2.50, less if you get a Transperth card with auto deduction.
The downside houses starting $600k!
And onya Fishfinder!! LMAO.
