Looks like someone may have just used up 1 of their 9 lives.

Pretty lucky to be able to walk that far and survive with no ill effects, these guys were obviously seasoned outback travellers and new their survival stuff.

Every year on average 5 - 6 die in the outback, some of which have lived there all their
lives and should know better. Events like this can happen to anyone no matter how well prepared,
you should always travel with a least another vehicle if possible when going into remote areas
and carry extra food and water, a HF radio or sat phone and distress beacon on each vehicle
and report your position each day.

Yeah it is sad that these things happen Leigh. These guys seemed very well prepared for their travells and carried all the gear you mentioned, unfortunately for them they didnt have the time to get any of it out of their ute before it went up in flames.

What this highlights is the need to have a fire extinguisher in a very easy to get to spot and make sure you check your exhaust regularly for spinifex build up when driving through that type of country.

They say in the article, that they are seasoned travellers, obviously they forgot rule one of travelling through spinifex grass. Just goes to show, that complacency can bring you undone real quick.

44gallon drum of diesel in the back wouldn't have helped things.

Except it was Petrol.

In which case it would have really helped things...

Diesel won't blow up as readily, but spinifex fire will burn a diesel vehicle just as well as a petrol one.

Just goes to show, you need the emergency gear, and it needs to be really accessible, not buried in a box in the back.
