  • Alternatives to Oz Tent

    Hey all

Been searching and searching for a new tent and information overload is just overwhelming and confusing.
Sorry if this has been covered.

I really like the Oz Tent, BUT, they are too expensive and the deal breaker is they are so big when packed, 2M long for most of the range.
I dont have a roof rack and no plans to fit one.

Any recommendations for a tent that goes up fast with the minimum fuss, has standing headroom, 4 man, light, packs up small.

    Price range, $500 or less.

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

The next closest thing i can think of this the Blackwolf Turbo 240 lite. It's not canvas like the full blackwolf Turbo 240 but has the same quick erection speed. Should be around the $500 mark.

We've imported from a US outdoor store a lightweight 6-person dome tent which weighs 6.5Kg and rolls up into a very small package.

$350 USD - shipping is about another $100...

          http://www.backcountry.com/mountain-...erson-3-season

Ours is a previous model to this, however the concept is the same. Great weight/space saver!

            Hello 1coolbanana,

We used to have an Oztrail 9+ tent. It was 2700 by 3600 with a central pole and an angled support at the rear. Folds up to about 900 square and 150 thick with a seperate pole bag. Cost us $350 5 years ago. Rays sell a similar type, but not quite as good, at $360 now. We took it everywhere, even when we towed a caravan becuase you never knew when you would need it.

            regards

            Ross

                  1coolbanana,

Funny you should ask about tents. I've just been looking at the Black wolf and Oz Trail 240 tents.

I prefer the Black wolf canvas turbo 240. But its around $1200... Ouch. (I'm saving my pennies!)

The Polyester version only has a small visor type canopy at the front, but is much cheaper $769. Still a good looking tens and really easy to put up.

The oz trail blitz is the same type of tent. The 240 canvas is currently on sale for $699 (normally $949) at Vancruiser, 700 Frankston Dandenong rd Carrum Downs (While stocks last)

Oz trail canvas pack size is 123x35x35 and weight is 21kg.

Black wolf polyester pack size is 121x28x32 and weight is 19.5 kg. Canvas version (with a better front canopy) pack size is 121x28x33 and weight is 19.5kg.

Lucky I still had the brochures on the kitchen table eh....

                  Happy shopping.

                    Thanks for that nige.

They would be ideal and Id like to get one of those but the packed size of those tents is huge, they are heavy also.
Im tending to be thinking of something lighter at the moment.
What i did find that is really a fast tent but its big, seems decent quality and its compact once packed is the Wanderer 4V Latitude.

Sure its not in the same league but Im by myself most of the time and the others are too big too heavy and take up too much space.

They are going quite cheap at the moment to at under $300.

This one below is from memory 2400 x 2400 x 1850 h packs quite small and is very light.

The domes are light BUT if you are putting it up every night it WILL drive you mad. I used one on a CSR trip last year and no matter what it took 10 min to put up but quick to come down. You can't stand up in most of them. For this year's long trip to Arnhem Land I had a Ray's Outdoors tourer tent-2400x2400 at the base, 1 pole, 4 pegs,5 mins from stopping the car to having it up and all of the stuff out of the car into the tent.AND I could standup in it and fit a stretcher into it. Two stretchers will fit, just, or 4 sleeping on the floor easily. It went up about 25 times in 6 weeks. It depends what you want the tent for. If it is a trip where you are on the move a lot the "tourer" type tents are the go. If you want it to last 20 years then you can pay $1000 up but if this is not an issue and you are largely dry season tenting it, then cheaper quality will do. Mine is fine after this trip.Budget $200-400 for this. possibly good second hand ones can be had for this.Mine is about 1m x1 m x .15m when packed and about 14kg with poles etc.good but not the tent for long stays with the family. You can get extended tourer tents but hese are heavier and bigger when packed. Neil

                        Hi Neil
Bugger, that all makes a lot of sense!
Ill have to rethink, but Im running out of time.
14kg and only 1m long I can live with.
                        Cheers

Trying to buy something thats cheaper to do the same job is like settling for a Great Wall when you really want that 150 series !

The 30 second tent is bloody awsome and will last forever.

                            Hi Paul
Id would love to but they are 2 meters long when packed??
There just isnt enough room IN the car for one.
Even the smallest one is 1.6 metres long.
If it wasnt for that, Id be on one like a fly on a turd
                            Cheers
