  • Buggered Pioneer camper trailer

65km from Warburton on their way to the red centre this WA couple came unstuck when the stub axle mounting plate on their less than 18 month old Pioneer trailer busted off. Mechanical services in Warbo closed for 2 weeks and local shire didn't want to know anything about it. Arranged for some local assistance as nearest commercial recovery truck nearly 900km away in Kalgoorlie. Reinforces the need to routinely inspect chassis and suspension components on both your car and trailer. This is the third axle plate that I have seen sheared off in similar fashion.

    Roof rack says it all.

    Trailer still upright and attached.

Tyre obviously slashed and stub axle mounting plate welds broken clean through.

Water tank cracked open and brake line severed.

That is poor engineering looking at the size of the plate and the tube they welded it on. I hope not all independent suspensions are like that.

The welds are so cleanly broken through that I would suspect poor welding techniques. The individual pieces have not fused together. I'm no welding guru though.

Looks like the tyre has deflated and then failed, with subsequent failure of the axle mounts of a trailer that looks like it may be overloaded for a single axle design.

That is pretty poor... It looks like there are just four small welds holding that plate on...

Makes a not too smancy fancy solid leaf sprung axle turned out of a single piece of steel look pretty bloody good!

I am looking at getting a 'Extreme Ranger' from GIC next march and had a look at the independent suspension. looking at photo, the design is better (photo halfway down the page)

                        I agree.
It looks like the plate has just been tacked in place, and they have neglected to go back and weld it up.

Just out of interest, how from those photos could you possibly tell the trailer is overloaded?

As I said, it LOOKS like the trailer design makes it overloaded for the size of the single axle. The extra boxes on the drawbar shows this.
I would be ensuring that the axle capacity could handle the weight of a fully loaded trailer.
And as I suggested, the tyre may have deflated first, which would have put a lot of strain on the affected wheel and hub assembly, causing it to break.

I inspected the tyre and I don't think it deflated and then caused the plate to break off. I think that, as the plate broke, the tyre has ripped open as it passed under the suspension arm. There's no sign of deflation/failure on the outer facing edge of the tyre. Anyway, a tyre failure shouldn't really result in catastrophic damage like that.
