  • NSW VSI-50 Legislation Back Again!!!

Have look at the video and text here.

    http://www.4wdaction.com.au/articles...eat-once-again

Guys, I reckon this new law is the thin edge of the wedge.
I have seen too many fun things banned over my lifetime.

I would encourage all to kick up a stink. Those of you not in NSW need to kick up too. We all know how these state laws soon become national when recreation and fun is concerned.

      This what I posted elsewhere:

"Don't shoot me, but I'm in two minds regarding this legislation. I have been 4wding for many years and have only ever had a maximum 32" tyres on a Patrol. Over time I found that I was becoming very limited in where i could go off road, due to larger tyre tracks making it difficult for me to traverse. Since selling my latest Patrol, I simply don't take the Prado on some of the tracks I used to use as I'm sure I would cause too much damage to the car. My point is where does it end? 33"tyres these days seem too small and 35"are fast being fitted to most large 4wds. This can only mean that when the tracks start getting chopped up and rutted, most 4wds on say 31"won't get through without assistance.
I believe that a 2" lift and 31"tyres should be legislated so normalish vehicles can still enjoy some of the more popular tracks as well.
Anyway, my thoughts only as I have stopped using some of my more favourite tracks simply because I now need a bigger lift etc."

Now I can see the concern of certain businesses and their constituents, as this has the potential to kill (or at very best, hurt) entire industries so they need us to help keep them supplying dividends to their shareholders. Now why would most Prado owners care if a lift is limited to 2" and tyres to 31"? Most of us don't go higher, simply because if we wanted higher we have bought a Patrol or larger Crusier, right?

      Anyway, that's my argument.

        Those are fair points BB.

If the yobos all got about in Unimogs, 6"x35" Patrols would have to be taking the chicken tracks. I also think allowing more serious mods for 4wd club members is a good way to stop people kitting out Tonka trucks for shopping duties.

After reading the draft laws, the only significant change I can find is that the tyre size ceiling is 2"> than standard. 150mm (6") lifts are still permitted with engineering certs, but the 150mm factors in tyre height and I'm not sure if that's new.

2" and 31's ??? Come'on ladies! There's plenty dirt roads around this country, highly maintained National Park roads and many decent State forest roads which will be perfectly suited to your style.

I know a Patrol owner who's scared of driving up a mild incline with 10cm "ruts". 30 years ago he would have been on in the tray of a 2wd ute, going through worse conditions, with gun in hand. Life and one's perspective change, give others a chance to live the life too.

The existing cap of 35's is sensible.

              Oh, and the changes:

In two weeks VSCCS will come into play; Engineers may be out of work, as RTA is starting a new scheme where I believe mechanics & manufacturers will be responsible for certifying their own work.

At the same time, RTA is TRYING to get NCOP (VSB14) + NSW supplement rules passed. The NSW supplement might have some good alterations for us, but we don't actually know what's in the NSW supplement, as they aren't releasing it to the public until it's passed (to avoid backlash... hmm... delays?) EDIT: perhaps that VSI50 is NSW supplement, maybe?

I've also heard that because of VSCCS, it could be easier to get mods done.

4wdaction are rapidly degrading their credibility with this propaganda.

Sorry but I support the 75mm combined lift and restrictions of >50mm RD of tyres. These specs are better than was requested by the vast majority of supporters the last time VSI-50 was raise.

Yes it is fun for the boys, but there are other road users and major engineering and safety concerns when vehicles are mod'd greater than these specs.

I support and had a Comp truck but in line with track cars and other motor sport vehicles, Comp trucks should not be able to be driven on public roads.
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

I though 15mm was limit for RD increase of tyres. So these changes would make my Prado technically legal.

Why are people blaming the 4wd, whether it has been lifted 1 inch to 6 inches or still std, it will tear up a track if it is in the wrong hands, it all comes down to the driver and his/her attitude, making these rules is going to make no difference, they need to crack down on the yobbos that are wrecking it for the rest of us.

I Must say when I got the email and viewed the video with Glen and Shaun I didn't really think that it was that big of a deal, personally if I could increase tyre size by 2" and suspension by 2" then I would be as happy as a pig in the preverbial. This combo on most vehicles will get you almost everywhere there is to go in this country, so the 35" + tyres and the mega lifts are really more for comp style vehicles than road runners.

It will be very interesting to see how this pans out, 4WD action and a few others took great credit for the bullbar win, however my mail is that the 4wd clubs association was the group that made that one go away and not the mags, the clubs association had numerous meetings with every state minister and the federal minister, 4WD action just made a lot of noise.

The way this is set up it sounds like the clubs are going to be all for the proposal, so not sure if 4WD action actually has the pull to make a difference, anyway it will be interesting to see, I for one plan to sit on the fence for this one and see what happens.

                            Cheers Andrew

Seems like I'm with most of the responses here and don't disagree with this. When I first read the email from 4WD Action my first thought was "what's wrong with that". Keep the big lifts and tyres off-road only like other comp vehicles. I met a guy recently who had a 7" lift and huge tyres. I thought at the time it looked rather unstable for road use - he was commenting that he had only just got the yellow sticker off it. Apparently he got the yellow sticker for being lifted too much under current rules. His solution to the problem - lower it to 6" get the sticker removed and then raise it back up! He seemed the sort who would go and rip up the tracks so not surprised.
