  • Am I expecting too much from my installer?

I've recently had some accessories fitted to my 150 by an installer in Sydney and can't say I'm impressed by the quality of work.

I've never had work like this done on vehicle so maybe my expectations are too high?!

Would you guys accept this or should I be pushing them to sort it out? I'll be taking the car back later in the week to fix up wiring for the second battery and hope to get some issues rectified then.

I was up for my 10K service and asked for this to be done while they had the car, they forgot!

Rear bumper cut out for tow bar. Questioned this and was told we cut plastic with a hacksaw and that's how it looks. It's not that hard to cut straight! I'll probably end up getting some rubber to tidy it up.

There are a few spots in the engine bay around the compressor install where paint has been scratched and not touched up, largest is about 6cm. Mentioned this over the phone and they'll "take a look at it" when the car's back.

RHS recovery point install seems okay but I'm concerned that they've ground out a section of the LHS point to put an extra bolt in for the bar. Have emailed pics to Outback Ideas for their feedback on whether this could potentially affect the strength and ultimately safety of the recovery point.

I also had them install a GME 3540 behind the dash. Where's the fuse for the radio? Yep, it's under the stereo behind the dash!!

I forked out a fair bit of coin to get this work done professionally as I assumed they'd do a much better job than I could. I'm now questioning my logic and doubt I'll go down the same path next time.

That towabr install is the worst I have ever seen.

I would be really pissed at paying for that.

If I was an installer, I wouldn't be touching/modifying recovery points to fit something else that was interfering.

I thought my towbar install was a bit rough, but it perfect compared to yours. The quality of workmanship is not acceptable.

There was a recent post about consumer rights that I can't find, you have a strong case to get this repaired. Just be careful about who they get to do the repairs!

That's an understatement. My jaw nearly dropped when I saw that cut out...hit the floor when they said it's normal.

They couldn't even centre the cut out. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give them another opportunity to do something about it before I look into taking them to the ACCC

Absolutely disgraceful, you should not be paying for any or the labor, in fact they should replace your bar they wrecked and recovery point that they modified.
No question, absolutely unacceptable, any of it.

thats disgraceful. they should be replacing the bar and recovery point.

I was pissed enough after Toyota cut my bar when they stated many times they wouldn't, if they had done a job like that I may have killed someone.

I agree with everyone else here, that cut out on the bumper is disgraceful, especially as being "professional installers" that should be an extremely easy, everyday job, I would be very unhappy with that quality of workmanship on my brand new, or even second hand car. The idea behind getting things installed by professionals is that they should do a professional job!

I'm a panelbeater and we regularly cut out bumpers for towbars but not like that!! And we put edge moulding on the cut edge like Toyota does to neaten things up. Thats just disgraceful. Hope you get some sort of satisfaction out of your complaints.

my oh my oh my... I think enough has been said already I'd definitely be kicking up a stink about the towbar that is just down right disgraceful. I tell you what I'd be embarrased to have workmanship come out of my own backyard let alone get that from a professional installer.

                            This one that I posted.

The ACCC is responsible for administering the Competition and Consumer
Act 2010 which incorporates the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) in
Schedule 2 of that Act. The ACL is a single national law which aims to
protect consumers and ensure fair trading in Australia. Under the ACL,
consumers have the same protections, and businesses have the same
                            obligations and responsibilities across Australia.

The ACL provides all consumers with certain guarantees when they
purchase goods and services. These are known as the consumer guarantees.

The consumer guarantees outline the circumstances in which a business is
required to provide a remedy to a consumer.

If a good or service does not meet any of the consumer guarantees, then
the consumer may take action to obtain a remedy from the seller, service
provider or manufacturer/importer -for example, a refund, replacement,
repair or having an unsatisfactory service performed again. If the
guarantees have been met, the consumer guarantees do not require
                            businesses to provide a remedy.

Many businesses choose to offer extra warranties or promises-often
called voluntary or extended warranties-in relation to their goods or
services. However, consumer guarantees automatically apply regardless of
any voluntary or extended warranty given by a seller or manufacturer of
goods. The guarantees also have no set time limit-depending on the type
and quality of the good, businesses may be obligated to provide a remedy
after any voluntary or extended warranty, for example a manufacturer's
                            warranty, has expired.

WHAT PROTECTIONS CONSUMER GUARANTEES PROVIDE YOU WITH

                            Consumer guarantees require that:

                            * goods are of acceptable quality
                            * goods are fit for their specified purpose
                            * goods match the description, sample or demonstration model
                            provided
                            * express warranties that are provided by the trader are met
                            * consumers have clear title to the goods, free from securities
                            and charges and undisturbed possession.

                            WHAT REMEDIES ARE AVAILABLE

If a good fails to meet any of the guarantees listed above or a seller
fails to meet their obligations, the consumer is entitled to a
remedy-either a repair, replacement, refund or compensation for any drop
in value from the original price paid-depending on the circumstances.

Generally, sellers will be able to choose whether they remedy the
problem with a replacement, repair or refund. However, if the problem is
major or cannot be or is not fixed within a reasonable time, the
consumer may choose between a refund, replacement, or compensation for
                            the goods' drop in value.

                            WHAT ACTION CAN YOU TAKE

If you feel that the good that the online supplier has supplied does not
meet your consumer guarantees, you should first attempt to negotiate a
remedy with the seller. More information on writing a complaint letter
(or "letter of demand") is available on the ACCC website
                            <http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/815362> .

                            The ACCC does not offer an individual dispute resolution service;
therefore, if you wish to pursue a remedy for breach of a consumer
guarantee, and you are unable to resolve this matter with the online
supplier through either verbal or written communications, you may wish
to contact the Fair Trading Office that the online seller is registered.
Local fair trading or consumer affairs agencies can suggest a range of
strategies that you may wish to explore to resolve your concerns. They
can also provide information on how to make a claim through the small
claims court or tribunal should this become necessary.

More information regarding consumer guarantees is available in the ACCC
publication, Consumer Guarantees - a guide for consumers

Thank you for contacting the ACCC. I trust this information is of
                            assistance.

I appreciate everyone's feedback, you've confirmed my thoughts that I shouldn't be accepting this quality of work from a professional installer.

I don't want to name the business in a public forum until they've had an opportunity to rectify the careless work. I'm waiting on a response from their head office since the owner of this franchise tells me the quality of the work provided is acceptable.

Before taking the car in, the owner spent a fair bit of time with me going through various products I was interested in (another shop handed me a price list and told me to come back when I knew what I wanted). What made me decide to spend my money with these guys was that they took the time, weren't just pushing their own product and the owner assured me that the work would be of the highest standard.

Since this tread has created a bit of interest, here are some more issues from the install
