I must be doing something VERY wrong then, because 1.2T behind me was adding between 4-5 lt/100km in hilly terrain!

It will the the old diesel as you have to wring it so much harder on the hills i have the same motor i got about 2l back when chipped and a lot better driving experience but when im towing the goldstream fully loaded and with second spare on the roof etc i always budget for about 17l per 100 this was realised after a half lap around ozOriginally posted by Prado BB View PostI must be doing something VERY wrong then, because 1.2T behind me was adding between 4-5 lt/100km in hilly terrain!"Drive down that track really fast, if something gets in your way turn"

I pull a 1.5T Windsor rapid with my V6 with no problems at all...I do click the selector over to sports mode and manually pull it out of top gear if its labouring a bit or just stick it in drive either way does it easy..My fuel usage jumps to around 20L/100 pulling the van but I don't really care too much about economy.2010 Kakadu with all the usual stuff.... Having owned a 95 series petrol and 120 series D4D diesel i confirm I will never own another petrol again.
On the lighter side, the fuel savings are a nonsense, you always end up towing your petrol mates home when they run out of fuel.

It comes down to how much hassle it might be having to fuel up more often with the petrol. If you're not driving long distances in remote areas and don't mind fuelling up every 700km or so then the Petrol will be ok.
Either option will tow just fine.2008 D4D M6 GXL [MT ATZ-P3][Whitey's Ironman 45710FE/45682FE+KTFR101H/Dob487][extended Roadsafe links][Polyairs][DBA T3/T2][amts diffdrop & recovery points][Tin175's stone guards][Bushskins BashPlate][ARB Sahara][IPF 900s][Snorkel][WindCheetah][MaxTrax][IC-440][Parrot Asteroid][ARB Fridge][Lifestyle 2nd Row Fridge Mount][ARB Compressor][Thumper][SandGrabbers][Cargo Barrier][Tigerz Awning][MCC Rear Bar]

R u guys serious , if vehicles pulling heavy weights were meant to be petrol powered why are all trucks diesel ...come on ...the fuel thing is a side issue all together . As is the resale value ....diesels cost more to buy , but you get a hell ofa lot more when you sell them as a percentage of the purchase price.
Diesel gives you the torque which makes you move ...petrol gives you revs but little else under full load .....
Go the diesel and if you really think the power is insufficient , throw a chip on it and then watch it pull a gear higher everywhere.....
Modern diesels (commonrail technology) is a huge step forward from the old days ....... Even my wifes diesel Holden cruze is impressive, I I would put my Diesel Prado up against any similar petrol any day ..... (with the chip in of course) ...LOL . Power , economy, reliability , resale value ....diesel wins every time ....

Trucks are diesel because of the longevity of the motor, and we are talking 10+ litre engines here, you dont get that in a 4wd, what you do get is a light diesel, that will not last anywhere near as long as a truck motor, and with the Cruze, you get an even lighter high tech diesel motor, it will be lucky to see over 300000k's, they have massive turbo lag too, and infact totally rely upon the turbo to actually move the vehicle.Originally posted by prokiwi View PostR u guys serious , if vehicles pulling heavy weights were meant to be petrol powered why are all trucks diesel ...come on ...the fuel thing is a side issue all together . Maybe you should check the number of threads in the diesel forums and compare them to the number in the petrol forums.Originally posted by prokiwi View Post...LOL . Hi Fellas. I am with the diesel brigade. I tow a 26 ft Jayco weighing 2.8 tonne with my 90 series 1KZ-TE and it is returning around 17 litres per 100 km. Normal running around 9.5 - 10 per. I don't have to constantly watch the temp on hills and extra fuel in cans is less volatile than petrol. Is right at limit of towing unfortunately and am angling for a 100 series cruiser in new year. I would suspect the larger unit will be more economical towing this load (my main arguement for the finance minister). The previous owner of the caravan used a 2006 4.8 litre straight 6 patrol petrol and was using 19 per upwards. Cheers.2005 100 Series Landcruiser. 4.2 T/D 5 speed auto. LTD c/w AHC/Leather etc.
