    Guys,

Received my unit earlier in the week, had a quick play with it today whilst driving around. First up, mine is a Bluetooth unit, if you intend to use an iPhone or iPad (as I did) you need the Wifi version (DOH!).

Having said that, works pretty well with the included, somewhat basic software but a quick search of the web for software to operate on a Windows PC turned up a few options. I went with the trial version (21 days, not fully functional I understand) of a paid application that seems to work pretty well on a small Dell Netbook.

Lots of configurable screens, stripcharts etc. Interestingly, the software detected TWO ECU's, each with differing numbers of PID loops it was looking after. The screenshots show a couple of the screens. I'm already trying to keep my instantaneous fuel demand below 15l/100k so time will tell if I succeed in lowering my average consumption (or have an accident because I'm busy driving along looking at the PC on the passenger seat).

Sorry about the quality, taken on a Crapberry.

    Fuel economy over two days

    One of the default Dashboards

I'll have a bit of a play, seems to do everything I'd want. Will get the Wifi version eventually.

          Great Idea! and Cheap!

Searched Ebay for ELM327 and look for the version you want.

I've got one on order from China Bluetooth V1.5 for $14.69 free shipping.
"ELM327 OBD2 OBDII CAN-BUS V1.5 Bluetooth Auto Car Diagnostic Interface Scanner"

Great Idea, going to use it with my Google Nexus phone, yet to choose the App however "Torque Pro" looks OK.

          Bernie.

Anyone get this running with a decent software set up? If so can you give a small review, looking to see how much diagnostic data this can display e.g. fault codes, injector response times and any other useful information.

                      Hey Guys

Just an F.Y.I, I had one of the ODB II jobs from Ebay ELM327.... in the prado for a while.
The other night I found that it was actually VERY hot and had started to Melt, obviously I have now removed it and will not be using it in the future.

It was not causing any issues with the car and was not giving off any smell. The plastic label was melting off and the case was very hot to touch.

I got some fault codes on the dash on a trip coming back from up north recently, VSC and Brake faults. After stuffing around for a while I removed the OBD unit and the faults disappeared. Havent put it back yet

Hi Berniebfg the " ODB II jobs from Ebay ELM327.... in the prado for a while." as you say,, was designed to be a diagnostic tool so you can check things and fix them. It was not supposed to be left in the car connected ,no wonder it gets hot and melts.

                              Did not know that....

They do have screen setups for live data, so I'm sure there are people that run them for long periods.
Would be nice if they clearly warned people not to keep them installed for long or they will melt... oh that's right no one would buy them then.

                              Bernie.

OBD2 apps - fancy version of scanguage

at work yesterday my attention was drawn to those cheap bluetooth obd2 readers for sale on ebay. A guy at work had bought one. Basically is an obd2 reader that you leave in the socket and it links to your smartphone...the app this guy had was freakin awesome! it gave readouts on all the engine stuff, like intake temps, transmission, blah blah but also had all this other stuff on it too. seemed to be a complete car diagnostic system. The app is called iOBD2 and its in the app store. he just has his iphone on a mount and can see all this stuff. also like a scangauge he can set alarms so his phone will beep if a threshold is reached. it also does various performance readouts like 0-100 etc which was fun ;-).

anyway any of you guys seen this? the unit is $30 and the app is free...seems a better option to sticking yet more crap all over your dash. Might order one and report back....
2013 (12 build) GX Auto.......with safari snorkel, toyota bar, tow bar, roof racks, led spots with fancy newpro switchgear, uniden remote UHF and aerial, ARB bash plates, Roadsafe recovery points, digoptions radio, general grabber AT2s, cheap ebay roof rack that has stood up surprisingly well.....
