A point also to keep in mind, modern alternators use micro processor controlled
regulators, it would be very simple and cheap for the car manufactures to add
smart charger functionality to their alternators if they deemed it necessary.

Granted their only worried about the cranking battery but if you were to believe
all the sales spiel from the DC DC charger brigade the cranking battery should
    have one too:
HKB Electronics, manufacturer of the Alternator Voltage Booster, Silver 2008 D4D,Lifted,Underbody protection, Alternator Voltage Booster, Tiger Z winch, Lightforce DL, Air Horns, Tanami Drawers, Drop down fridge slide, Outback cargo barriers, Rotronics dual Battery system, Polaris GPS, HF/UHF/VHF, Radio speaker combiner, Long ranger water tank, Diff breathers, Inverter, Snorkel and others

Have a look at this link, it seems a minimum of 80w solar panel is needed with the ctec.

Hi Andrew. I also subscribe to the KISS maxum. I run two N70's in parellel in my Prado using bloody big fat conductors and heaps of earths. I have a Redarc VSR in the engine bay and run a bloody fat conductor down the back to a 50 amp Anderson plug (funnily enough, I have checked frquently and the Redarc is always closed - even just after starting the engine). This goes straight to a 105 A/H deep cycle in the van. 140 watt solar on roof with it's own regulator. Van has factory 30 amp power supply. I dont fret over how many amp hours the fridge/lamps/ad nauseum have pillaged from the battery. After a week of camping it seems to do the business and the Prado still starts, all the functions in the van work. From an "old school" mechanics perspective it seems silly to spend more money for what? I suppose if I have to start replacing batteries more than every 3 years I might have a closer look. JMHO. Cheers, Derb.

alot of caravan owners are saying this also , cetek havnt disclosed this as yet
but it seems the only way to get it to work properly is to have a 80 watt or larger panel
