What are you saying? Are all those people not really my friends? Don't they really like me? am I not the most popula person with a fantastically superior and fun life that everyone wants to know about? This is confusing, I need ti twitter for some help and post the results on Face ache.

In my current employers office of around 50 peolpe, I am the only person who is not on facebook. As a long term IT worker, many peolpe find this amazing but I have no desire to put my life online. The peolpe I want to talk to, I talk to and have no desire to be "asked to be friends" with peolpe I dont want to be friends with.
Anyway, each to their own. Obviously a lot of people "like" it.

Facebook and Twitter free and intend staying that way.

I've never been on FB (Facebook) because I see a lot of my friends and family regularly. My wife has it and she has admitted recently it's growing old. My former boss bought me a shirt a year ago when he went to England that says, "No I'm not on f*#%ing Facebook!" I've worn it once and that was in Rainbow Beach just after getting back from Fraser Island and foreign backpackers were laughing at it as they were walking past. Even the little Japanese ones were amused haha.

My biggest turn off with FB is the depressant no friend nutters out there that feel the need to comment on it 10 or more times a day with the most pathetic meaningless or self degrading comments and a lot of people would've had at least one these people in their friends list at some stage. One particular story: We know a mid 20's woman through my cousin that my wife added to FB over a year ago, and 3 months later blocked.... Permanently! This woman appeared very normal in person with no signs of a mental glitch going on and could interact with others quite normally, but when she was FB during the day she was out of control and constantly uploading f*cked up comments about how the world was against her and no one gave a sh*t. How bored she was and her fiancee didn't care. How depressed she was and felt worthless, had no sense of purpose, bitched about having nothing to do..... Commented constantly about getting job, but never actually did anything about getting one. Mind you she didn't work and stayed at home doing nothing while her fiancee worked as a civil engineer. That would explain the constant boredom. But she'd air her dirty laundry every single day on FB without fail and it was always the same excuses or complaints. All of her comments were just depressing. Her group of FB friends would sympathise with her and then all she'd do is tell them not to worry about it and she'll just wallow in her own pitty & so forth and basically push them away in the process because she didn't want to be helped. This cycle went on and on. My wife has a smart phone which was linked to FB and it let her know any time a commented or status was uploaded or changed, so you can imagine she got the sh*ts with this girl's comments quick smart. But in person she was so happy, normal & outgoing. Her previous week of FB problems were never spoken about or acknowledged and everyone got along fine. Then she'd go home with her partner that night and the FB comments would start again.

We knew of another couple including their children who when the parents argued constantly the whole family would air their dirty laundry toward one another on FB for everyone to read. It was completely nutty. My wife blocked them too because she got so sick of the negativity.

Then there was another girl my wife knew who would comment constantly every day/night about her gym progress and a certain workout she had just done or how sore her hamstrings were that day.... Topped off with what she just ate or drunk at the time (or was about ot eat) and let the FB world know how many calories or whatever was in the food she had just eaten hahaha... WTF!!

It's to my understanding that FB is largely a magnet for some manic depressants with no friends (no real ones anyway) who feel the need to upload comments vigorously everytime a thought process changes in their heads in order to gain sympathy, attention, or try to be something they're not.... ie, trying to act like they're constantly living life to its fullest by uploading miniscule crap all the time and somehow think other people care. Some of these people are starved or friends and or a social life. Yeah, a few are making the cries for help but at the same time don't want to be helped and would never admit it to anyone, but really do need to consult a psychologist. And now there's some other website starting up to rival FB called Youzoo. This is all we need, more of these sites popping up because the advertising dollars are so good. Never mind the wierdos they attract. That's just a side effect. You either read their comments, block them, or don't be a member of FB to start with so you don't have to be subjected to it.

My former boss and his wife (early 30's in age) who both seperately managed two workplaces for the same company, tried very hard for 2 years to get me on FB so their friends list would go over 100 as they were stuck on 99 for ages and had nobody else to add. Let me be frank in saying this because it was again a direct link between an addicted FB nutbag and someone with real issues going on. They both had no friends. His wife was cheating on him with a work colleague for a couple of years. She openly hit on some of the males at her work place including me when I worked there. She constantly acted like a stripper trying to score a lap dance. All the while, she her and her husband treated each other like sh*t which was absolutely crazy haha. They yelled at each other over the phone & slammed the phone down on each other at work regularly. Forwarded abusive emails be-littling each other over a work related dispute/miss-understanding and CC'ing others in on them. When she'd come into our office for whatever the reason they'd talk down to each other and cut each other off in conversation, and then afterwards he'd vent his frustrations on his staff after his wife left the building. She'd giggle through work meetings or meetings with clients/supplier's representatives and constantly put her head onto one of her staff member's shoulders while her husbane was sitting on the other side of the table watching but saying nothing. It goes no and on. Both of these people were self proclaimed FB addicts commenting on anything and everything (I know because he used to show me all the time) and yet their lives were in complete dissaray. It's a crazy world in the FB realm. Things are not what they seem.

Don't use it. Don't like it....but it is a useful tool. Keeps the wife busy for hours so I can hide in the man cave or head out with the boys and solve the problems of the world over a beer or 6

Not sure why you don't include mobile phones with SMS in this list, that was the way of doing the same thing only a few years ago

But with FB they can reach far more people at the same time and all at zero cost.

I take umbrage to that statement by your lovely wife. What possible grounds would she have to makesuch an Ill informaed and obviously untrue statement. Please let her know I refuse to eat any of her perfect cooking until she apologises to you and the wider PP community.

If you dont want to use it ....dont. if you dont want to read some peoples crap dont add them as a friend. You've got to add them before they can start posting to(at) you. And its easy to unfriend them as well. I find FB useful to keep up with what my family and friends(real ones) are up to while we are on the road.
It's a good tool if used correctly. If I ever have to pay for it I'm outer here though

Being one of the IT people I have the great task of Internet access control at a major clients....guess what's been blocked , it was at the top of the CEOs list, why do I have an account to make sure any back doors to get into Facebook are also covered.....

                              BUT

The only good thing I have ever heard of about Facebook..

A guy at works mother passed away a week after his brother went backpacking in Thailand no one had any contact details for him, so his sister posted a picture of him on there told them we need to find my brother it's a family emergency can you help he is in Thailand some where...

How long do you think it took to have a friend of a friend of a friend to see the picture and go het that's him.....

Under 3 hours he was calling his family at home.......

I'm serious as even the guy at work whose family this happened to still thinks Facebook is a waste of Internet space....

Here's a social experiment I'd love to do just for a week block Facebook at the internets core routers insert evil laugh here !!!!!!!!
