Cost of buying new ($65K)(without mods) or near new could be a major reason why many owners are older. Some of us oldies (I'm 53) are still boys with toys: I have my 347 Shelby Cobra replica that I have had since I built it in '98. I've also got a few other cars but the Prado is my special toy. I bought my first new Prado in 98 and the current one in 09. When I was 18 I bought my first car - a second hand 1972 TC Cortina which cost me a fortune @ $1800.Dave

To test this theroy, I asked my 19 year old son and he confirmed I was an old fart at 47. I dont understand how this has happened, it was never part of my plan to be an old fart.....
I then asked him, would you have my Prado if I gave it to you? Sh!t Yeah, can I have it now? A 19 year old, old fart?Dave - 2010 Silver GXL Prado 150 TD Manual.

I'm 29, married and have a 20mth old boy. He knows which is Dad's car when I ask him because he points at it.
Dunno if the Prado is an 'old fart's car', but practical? Yeah, I think so. Foxo: love ya work mate. Someone here is older than me.....
On Saturday I turn 70 so am having a ball with the 120 Prado which we use to pull our camper trailer all over the country.
As for cars I've owned:
1. 1960. a 1938 Dodge sedan, my first car; my father bought it for my 18th birthday while at High School; wonderful car; wish I still owned it; built like a tank; old side valve 6.
2. 1963. a 1961 Ford Falcon; awful car, replaced almost everything on the car before I sold it.
3. 1966. a 1962 Morris Mini Cooper 997cc. Had the head worked over so what a rocket ship. Rolled it but had it rebuilt.
4. 1969. a 1966 HD Holden sedan: ok car.
5. 1971. a 1971 Brand new HQ Holden Monaro Coupe 253ci V8; great cruiser and chic magnet.
(1975 Married so 2 cars from here on.)
6. 1976. a 1974 Holden TA Torana 1300cc, slowest car I've ever owned; rusted out. AND Wife's car: a 1960 or 61 VW Kombi Van with split windscreen and large back window; bought a hobby farm so used it to carry gear and also pull our first camper trailer; Tagalong Brand. Also a Yamaha AT 125cc Trail bike to ride to work and on bush tracks.
7. 1981. a 1976 Volvo 244 GL sedan; safe car for small kids. AND Wife's car: a Toyota Hi-Ave Van LWB with extra seat in the back for the kids; still pulling camper.
8. 1990. a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE wagon; a great car but broke down a couple of times; could carry a ton
9. 1995. replaced wife's car: 1992 another Toyota Hi-Ace Van LWB with extra seat in the back and replaced the old camper trailer with a newer one: a Campomatic brand
10. 2001. a 1998 Holden Commodore VT sedan. Solid car and will go forever. AND wife's car: a 1995 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder. Son still drives it with over 300,000km on the clock; engine not touched.
11. 2009. Replaced the camper trailer with a Jayco Eagle Camper: AND Wife's car: a Honda Jazz VTi, a 1600cc goer; great town car
12. 2010. a 2004 Toyota Prado DieselLast edited by Sunshine; 13-06-2012, 04:21 PM.

Having turned 60 a few months ago I still feel excited about driving and getting out and about in our great country. I would have loved to have had my Prado when I did my one teacher school stints in the 70's and 80's at Maxwelton (A Datsun 180B) and Kioma (Another 180B and an XD Falcon with the ESP pack) I find that my Prado, a 2004 V6, gives me great comfort when touring and plenty of off road capability when exploring and it has always got me home safely. I am looking forward to a trip to the Cape next year and have no doubt that the Prado will do the job.
I had the chance to do some 4WDing in Tasmania over the long weekend in a GU Patrol. It felt so big compared to the Prado and not as nimble on the tracks.
Anyway it doesn't really matter what others think as long as you are happy with what you've got, so I must be a happy "old fart".2004,GXL V6 Auto. Friends of mine have fully decked out 80's, 60's and 70's. My V6 prado with nothing but a 2.5in lift and 265/75 tires has gone where all theirs have without a single problem, i have even had the chance of pulling them out more than once too!
Not old at all at 23 and down here 90 series are pretty damn common with younger people (not uncommon for them to be kid's first cars)
Although this is for the 3 door 4cyl 2.7 90, not the V6 95....
More than capable, more than happy with it. All I can say

Hi all. i'm 45 and on my 4th Prado. Had more cars than I care to remember and a particular fondness for a brand beginning with P and ending in 911.
garage currently has my Altitude ( 3 weeks old) and something else beginning with P and ending with 911, so why a Prado?
I believe that for my needs it is the perfect vehicle, comfortably tows the boat or the track car, Eat up the beach like nothing else and is great to get away with my young sons for a bit of camping and off road tom foolery. It will get me any where I want to go and at the same time does the interstate road trips with ease. Never had one let me down and resale is miles ahead of anything else I have ever owned. It my daily drive and regardless of whether my day involves fifty K' around the city or driving to sydney or Townsville in a day, I can't think of another car that handles it as well, as well as the lifestyle opportunities its genuine off road ability opens up.Last edited by gt3racer; 14-06-2012, 09:06 PM.2012 Prado Altitude TD4D... What a funny thread, here I was standing at the base of a big waterfall today in Kakadu National park talking to some older retirees about 4WDriving, tracks, tyre pressures and what not when finally the question comes up in the circle what 4WD do you have??? Most of these fella's all had a Prado as well, be it a 120 or 150.. I thought the same thing later on as I was driving home.. Am I driving an old mans car? Then I thought it is comfortable as f#ck in this thing I don't care lol...
I've had a couple of 4by's now, BJ40, Bundera, Hilux, two Sierra's one which I still have, Mazda Bravo, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Nissan Patrol Coil cab and in between those an SS Commodore and a Nissan 300ZX finally on the Prado obviously the newest out of the lot but not a single regret having it that's for sure.09 D4D Prado - Toyota issue White
