Im 33 and after destroying my xtrail on fraser and then being t boned by some bimbo in a barina on the Hume(the Xtrail was still driveable after that!) i decided i needed and wanted a 'proper' 4wd...was looking at a Patrol at first but the 3.0d engine issues scared me off. Aside from that i wanted
          Ground clearance
          Reliability
Low range activated by a LEVER, not some solenoid that decides to stick when you are up shit creek
          Diesel
          Economical
          A proper chassis
It really only left the 120 prado...the absolute sweetener was the 180 litre tank! Love it to bits now and my girlfriend thinks its cool too.

I agree with what all of you have said, great replies from a dedicated group of enthusiasts who know their vehicles and know they made a good decision. I find it very interesting reading about people's previous cars. The Prado is my 4th car (at 20, I know...)

            I started with a 92 Suzuki Sierra.
            Pros: Unstoppable
Cons: I felt hung over after driving it for 2 hours

            2005 VZ Ute
Pros: Comfy, economical, cruise control, looked great, quite
Cons: 2WD, 2 seats, build quality questionable

            1990 Surf SSR
Pros: Great off road, great size and practicality
Cons: 2.4 TD very uninspiring and completely knackered

            2001 Prado TD

            Pros: ALL OF THE ABOVE!
            Cons: NONE OF THE ABOVE!
Matt- 2001 GXL Turbo Diesel- ARB Deluxe Bar, Tigerz11 10 000lb Winch, Brown Davis Underguard, IPF 800XS, GME TX3400, Custom Draw System, LT 265/75r16 BFG All-Terrain T/A's, Lovells and Konis, Unifilter. When I was looking to buy a Prado, some colleagues laughed and said I should buy something decent like a Toureg, because they have the best offroad performance!! *puke*

All vehicles have their pros and cons... including GQ's and Toureg's... but we as driver/owners have different needs and applications, so go for what suits YOU.

Im 31 and have my first Prado now. In the past I've had :

                1981 Volvo 244GL (Beige)
Pros : "Safe" car/tank that my parents gifted to me and my brothers
Cons : It was beige and was a Volvo.

1985 Toyota 60 Series Landcruiser Diesel Auto
Pros: Normally aspirated diesel engines we're very slow, and with an auto transmission this was more so.
Cons : I didn't know how to 4x4 back then, so a bit of a waste. Also it was the family car, and I only got occasional use :-)

                1994 Ford ED Falcon
Pros : my first taste of a (somewhat) powerful 4.0L engine.
Cons : Chewed through the juice when driven by a 19 yr old.

                1991 Toyota 80 Series Landcruiser
Pros : My first love. This was the greatest car and I spent all of my spare money accessorising it and time fixing/4x4ing in it.
Cons : Ex girlfriend rolled it.

2004 Toyota 79 Series RV Ute
Pros : Awesome tough truck, with ideal setup for a single man's camping expeiditions. (Living in FNQ then, so Cape York, Savannah Way, Red Centre, Simpson Desert etc)
Cons : Too big for the city when I moved back down south.

                1982 Toyota 40 Series
                Pros : Cheap
Cons : I underestimated how little time I had to restore it and how much it would cost.

                2007 Jeep JK Wrangler TD
Pros : In all honesty (and I am a Toyota man through and through - in fact if the 76 series had airbags and abs i wouldn't have bought a Jeep) this was the most capable 4x4 I have ever driven (Caveat - that statement only applies after the standard suspension was replaced with a ~50mm lift kit). This was a light car, great angles, nice looking, traction control etc etc etc.
Cons : American build quality. When I was out driving it, the car was great, but it spent more time getting fixed under warranty than it should have.

2010 Prado GX 150 Series TD
Pros : Fits my 2 labradors in the back and the Mrs loves driving it!
Cons : Call me one eyed, but I haven't found anything that I don't like about it/can't work around.

                They are a great 4x4!

A variety of circumstances have led to me having quite a few cars over the years, but I think this one is here to stay. :-)

Does he mean, "old farts" are the target market? I think soccer mums/dads are, but that's irrealivant.
Does he mean, Prados are predominantly driven by said age group? Again I think soccer mums/dads make up the bulk of Prado drivers and its also irealivant.

Im 26, this is my first prado, second 4x4 (previously had a D21 Pathfinder, but keep that quiet) and my 12th car since getting my licence back in 2005. So far its been the best suited to my needs and wants, have had it for 9 months now and not a single complaint can I give it.
It was never going to win any drag races, which is fine as i'm over the whole ''boy racer'' phase of life. It's not that slow either, keeps pace with most other 4x4s unless they're toting V8's...
As for efficient, I pack the rear with around 350kgs of cargo once a week, do combination of city stop-start and highway 80km/h driving and I still come back with same fuel consumption as a colleagues Mitsubishi 360. Around $73-75 a week.
All in all i'm pleased as with my prado and wouldn't swap it for anything except maybe a newer prado.
97' Prado VX Grande Emerald/Silver, 3.4L, auto, Bilstein shocks/ Dobinsons coils 2'' lift, breathers on everything, snorkel, Maxxis Bighorns. Coming before Summer, Uniden uhf, spotties and with luck a winch bar.

I am old enough to demand respect and young enough to make mistakes. Since I was 18, I always wanted a 4x4. I have owned various vehicles both new and second hand including a TC Cortina that was very quick and blew 2 timing chains and an engine mount until I chained the motor to cope with the torque and bought a double row timing chain. So after decimating my v8 friends on quarter mile runs I decided I had had enough of the 1975 version of the "VT Comode" on steriods. I am on my second Prado having had them as both a Married guy with 3 kids and single guy experiencing a mid life crisis (hence the name), and now as a guy in a relationship with some spare cash to chose whatever I want.

I think as a total package with all things considered, the Prado is a bloody good buy IRRESPECTIVE of age.

If your still reading, the answer is 46. Would I chose another vehicle, maybe an Aston Martin DBS, but only as a to and from work car and fancy night out. The Prado would still be my preferred vehicle for everything else.

Well I'm 37, 4 kids and the missus. Had heaps of different cars but the last one was a Kluger due to seats required. Convinced the wife to step up to a 4wd and there really was only one choice.
The best thing I find with the 150 is meeting new people on forum trips(sorry not PP) who have a perception on what can be done in a Prado. Then at the end of the day come up and tell me how surprised they are with the Prado's capability off road. I think because there are so many "shopping trolley/ soccer mum" versions out there doing the daily grind, people overlook the Prado as a "real" 4wd.

P.S. Regularly my rig is one of two and sometimes the only one not to get stuck during the day! Including lifted Patrols, all manner of dual cabs usually with lockers and one blokes "unstoppable" Ranger XLT with e-locker! Ha!

                          Cheers,
                          Dusty

Dusty, it's funny you should say that. One thing I notice when out with the boys with x amount of lockers and muddies is that they tend to think there's no need to drive line and speed properly on the tracks. End result, me pulling my red faced mates out with the 'bloody shopping trolley' and not having to keep rebuilding my diffs and replacing CVs!

I love my bus, as my missus reminds me, sometimes a little too much. She's just jealous
