  • What's this yellow grease under the oil filler cap?

I was at a dealer checking out diesel utes and found this yellow greasy stuff under the oil filler cap. What is it and is it meant to be there?

Nevermind. I googled and it is condensation forming if the car has been doing very short trips but if the oil itself looks milky, then the engine is fubar'ed.

Its water in the engine oil and that amount of it looks bad..... could be a blown head gasket.

When I was googling the catch can water catchment they mentioned the condensation on the inside of the oil cap... Best to check the oil in the engine and the water in the radiator for cross contamination... But the short drives and a lack of "burning" off the water vapour is the cause...

Catch vans can help, apparently... (according to the performance forums)...

I'm intrigued as to how short the trips must be to have this occur...

If that is on a car in a car yard it makes me wonder wether the dealer is a real honest cookie and left it like that so he wasn't being deceptive, or they are so dumb they didn't think to give it a wipe so a potential buyer would not see it?

Either way, diesel that do short runs all the time aren't the sort you want to buy, if its an engine problem you don't want it either.

Worse than any of this though is that I heard a rumour that AMTS was looking at Nissans

                Cheers Andrew

That particular one is an 08 model with 150,000km. So that one must have done a lot of short trips only recently.

a lazy axle would make that even better.

Hi guys, The best test Ive found to do if looking at any sort of engine with this sort of build up under the cap, is to get engine up to temp and simply pull the dip stick out and drop small amount of oil from the dip stick onto the hot exhaust. If it smokes, all is good just condensation, but if it bubbles and fizzers walk away and dont look back. This must be dropped on the manifold not a heat sheild, The bubbling is cause from the water/coolant boiling off. Would recommend anyone looking at buying a second hand car to do this test, very quick and easy to do. Good luck in finding something right. Kris

The to do list is getting shorter.
