  • Which Way Around To Hold Shovel

Now before anyone tells me that you hold it by the handle, my question is aimed at storing it for travel.

When mounting the shovel on the roof which way around do people mount it. I have seen pictures with the head at both the front and rear and just wondering what the pros and cons of each would be?

Always head at rear of vehicle. Then if it drops mud everywhere it's not over a door...

That is that answered. Now what shovel holder? I've got rhino bars but I hear the rhino one sucks.

I use the rhino holders and love them. Just make sure you grease the threads.

          So one for the rear.

I have the Rhino holders and the GTG will be their first trip. So the tip is to grease the threads. Another job to add to the list

I like the QuickFists to secure my shovel and the Shovel head also to the rear.

slightly off topic, I have the 4x4 equip combo shovel in their carry bag in car.
The bag is large enough to also hold a half handle axe at the same time.

I also use the Quickfists. Shovel head at the rear. Have noticed less wind noise with this configuration. They are easy to mount/use and as they are rubber, have a bit of give for those "tight tracks".

Definately lubricate the threads on the Rhino holders, but oil or grease attracts dust, avoid these like the plague, use some form of dry lube that wont attract the dust.

More importantly though, do you store it on the left or the right?

                          Cheers Andrew

If we are talking about which side we store our shovel Andrew, my awning is on the passenger side, so the recovery equip, (MAXTRAX and Shovel) are on the drivers (right) side. Same goes for the other (right also )

I also mount my shovel rearwards with Quick Fists attached to Craigm's brilliant TraxRax. A word of caution though, my shovel did move within the QFists on some corrugated roads on our recent trip and was vibrating/rubbing on the paintwork. Once I noticed I used an occy trap to keep the shovel head off the paintwork and it didn't move from then.
