Check the picture in post #8 of this thread.

Only automatic 120s were ever fitted with ESC/VSC as part of the Toyota "DRIVER ASSIST TECHNOLOGY", DAT. If you have VSC you will have the DAC button down below the centre console. And the VSC light will come on as per Andrew's post if you engage the centre diff lock button (first picture in post #7 of the above thread). As an automatic the stubbie lever only goes from H to N to L.

Happy days then!! That means I don't have ESC/VSC and my Prado is completely legal with 50mm lift and 265/70/17 tyres. I imagine this will also be the case then for all 120 GX and GXL owners.

Not all. Anyone with OPII on an auto GX (me for example) or OPI on an auto GXL will have VSC.

As of today I am legal with the mods I have. If I did that after April next year then no go unless the suspension and tyres were proven to comply. As per all the previous posts.

Mjrandom, is your prado newer than July 07, I don't remember there being any "Option Packs" when I ordered mine?

                  Well that is interesting...

I dont know if I would risk modifying my Prado without it complying to the new rules.

Firstly, I'm sure the insurance companies will be all over this, and be happy to wipe their hands clean of any modified ESC vehicle that was not approved to have the modifications fitted.
Secondly, I certainly don't want to be chased or sued by an insurance company if I had an accident resulting injury or death.

I have a feeling that there will be a few vehicle accessory companies fading away in the not to distant future.

It's a shame really, I was just starting to plan my 2" lift mod.... Not anymore!!!

                  Cheers,

                  Jeff

NCOP = Nonsensical Crock Of Poo.
Bureaucrats with not much common sense and little knowledge of the real world making decisions to justify their positions and protect their arses. And the car makers are with them.
Aftermarket modifiers of suspensions and engine performance enhancers (chips) will no doubt need to employ appropriate engineers to certify their mods, which they probably already do in some way. Surely if they mod, say, one Prado 120, and its certified, then as long as all modified 120's thereafter are the same, then all is good? Would probably force us all to use ARB TJM etc approved workshops. Probably no more fitting suspensions at home on weekends with your mates.
One thing for sure, it will cost us consumers more.

If I've read it right, ARB are already testing their suspension to be within the limits of the ESC and therefore doesn't compromise it thus making it compliant. I'm sure if this is the case, ARB would be looking to cash in sooner rather than later by marketing their product as NCOP approved. This would be fantastic news for the vast majority of us. One thing I think should be emphasised is the way suspension is referred to. I think less eyebrows are raised if you call your suspension a Heavy Duty replacement rather than a 2" lift. I know my local ARB refer to as this saying, yes we supply a HD kit that sees about a 40-50mm increase in height. Always suggesting the lift was a byproduct of the suspension upgrade. I'm happy to call it what you like, I upgraded to accommodate the weight of the bar work, accessories and my four teenage kids!
So if this is the case, and tested suspension is compliant, the last battlefield will be the tyre profile. We all know major brands don't supply off road orientated tyres in a 65 profile. (Before everyone jumps down my throat, I know BFG A/T's are available and much loved!) So under the new laws should the way ahead be for approval for a profile increase or pressure on tyre manufacturers to increase their range to at least cover common (modern car) tyre sizes.

                      The debate and frustration continues!

                      Cheers,
                      Dusty

Here's an interesting question for the engineers in govt. on the 150 the traction control and stability control are both switchable. Eg they can be turned off. Does this then mean that the 50mm suspension and 25 mm tyres are them legal?

Only below 50km/h, ESC turns itself back on after that as far as I'm aware.
