  • Prado vs Hilux

Hi my wife and I are looking to purchase a 4WD to explore the back country here in NZ and then the dream is a big journey eg Cape Town to London etc

What is the advantage of a Prado over a Hilux and vice versa?

Wagon vs Ute, comfort and space vs bumpy and no as much. Tray to carry stuff vs none.

Depends what you intend to use it for and how many people and stuff you want to carry as well. Also, 180ltr tank vs ??

And towing capacity may be different as well.

One disadvantage you may wish to consider of the prado is that due to the extra height you cannot freight them by train in some areas. Im not sure if it will fit into standard shipping container

Here in NZ we can't get Prados with the big tank. The VX has the spare wheel under the back.

Anyone ever put the extra tank in one?

If an Earthcruiser will fit into a standard shipping container, a Prado will easily:

And here is one I prepared earlier... This was mine being loaded yesterday - it is lifted with roofbars and solar panels on top.

Out of interest... how did you get out? Did you have to climb out the back door?

And how is it secured for the journey?

There is enough room to the side to get the drivers door open (I don't think the passenger mirror was even tucked in).

They used ratchet straps and anchor points in the container, but I didn't see where they attached to the truck. I also had 3 spare wheels under the truck that are kept in position with some 2x4's nailed to the container floor.

They put up a partition behind the truck so that we could load some more equipment that is needed for the trip.
