  • Whats the real value?

So it took me 6mths to find my prado, originally driving an AU series 2 falcon ute for the last 6 years, decided it,s about time i owned a 4wd that wasn't a $600 farm beaten landrover, original needs had me looking at a dual cab ute so i could carry my kayaks, dirtbike etc. After much research and looking i,d settled on a nissan navara/older holden rodeo as focus points, then i drove them, barely any room in the back, agricultural drive and the fact the navara still has a leaf sprung rear and drum brakes wiped them out of the race, that left a dual cab hilux around 04 models for my coin, found a beautifully maintained 1 with no offroad, full service history, on petrol, only 140 000klms that i could have had for $14 200, i offerred $200 less, we haggled, someone else bought it. My loss.

Being toyota, they really hold theyre value, and are usually more expensive than the other brands, so i decided against the dual cab ute style and started looking at 4wd wagons, budget of $15k, daily runabout, weekend camper, trip to cape etc in the long run, just a cheap beater more or less, budget had me looking at the earlier prado,s, 99, 00, 01, some to be found out there in the v6 option around the 200 000klms range around the 10k mark, 100 series cruiser in there and last option was around the 04 pajero,s, could find a few non offroaded paj,s around the 150 000klm mark for around $15k.

Then i saw a 120 prado, coils, discs all round, 180l fuel tank, classy look, capable 4wd, awesome car, in my budget i found 1, ex NT rental, 170 000klms, those horrible thin steel wheels, lots of damage underneath and oil stains and unfortunately, the 2.7l motor, test drove it, no thanks, foot flat to the floor barely accellerating, i would seriously hate to need to overtake someone in a hurry on the highway in that vehicle, not to mention how hard that motor must work to haul that size vehicle around, so, i gave up and started looking at pajero,s a bit more seriously.

Then i found an 03 model, in the metallic champagne colour, bank managers car, no offroad, full itemised service history from day 1 (1 owner car) with not just stamps in the book, but reciepts for each service as well, 200 000klms on it, auto, pristine inside and out, literally not so much as a door dent from shopping centre,s, only extra,s were sovereign bullbar, unused 3000kg capacity towbar with the electric brake setup, endrust rust protection, bluetooth. Faults were hairline crack in dash (don't care that,s what dashmats are for) and the evil toyota tick.

Just had it,s major 200k service done, diff and transfer oils, new top of the line plugs, oil, all filters, gearbox service, brand new battery, 3mths prior a new radiator, air con compressor and full strip and replace of system, 6mths rego, rwc for $24k, watched with interest, 2 weeks later $22k, week later $20k, i though bugger it, if you don't go, you don't know so i test drove, examined, then offerred $16k, much to my suprise...................a week later i get a call, "ill take it", to say i was stoked is an understatement, had it now for 1 mth and couldn't be happier, had it up the beach at rainbow, up the mountains at jimna/kenilworth, and it,s easily the nicest vehicle ive owned, v6 is plenty powerful and as economical as my falcon ute was so happy with that.

So my querie is, the premium you pay for the toyota name, whilst great for resale, is not so great when you are buying, obviously we all know they are top vehicles, but do you believe the price is a little bit higher than it should be simply because they have the badge? IMO i paid exactly what the vehicle was really worth considerring it,s now 10 years old with 200k on the clock, thoughts?

    cheers

Karlmagoo, From the sounds of it you have done good. Full service history is a great thing. As long as you are happy with what you paid then every thing else does not count. It is all down to personal preference. I know guys that will not pay more than three grand for a car and thinks I am crazy paying forty for one. I think he is crazy for not spending more on his family. If it works be happy.

    SOL.

The real value is what someone else is prepared to pay. Red book etc are a guide but when it comes down to it if no one will pay the price it is too expensive. I am about to find out as I have two 4wds to sell in coming weeks. Hopefully gone easily without too many time wasters.

Hey Karlmagoo.... I did what you just went through last June.
        I had a 99 RV6 Prado and was after a 120 manual turbo diesel.
I advertised the RV6 in January 2012 all the while and for over 6 months before I advertised it I had been on the look out for a 120.
I soon realized that the petrol Prados are a dime a dozen and the t/diesels are very hard to find in good nick and low K's.
So it took me 6 months to find a buyer for my RV6, I wanted 11k but I got 9.5k for it, not too bad.
So i was on the hunt then for real and had to travel from Sydney to Melbourne to find the 120 I wanted. 135km on it mature owner from new 2004 gxl manual t/diesel... how much you reckon?
There were so few available like this that they demand a premium and the owners know this. The petrols turnover very fast and there is a huge range to choose from on carsales. Supply and demand, for a petrol in the same condition and year as my 04 diesel I could have saved over 10k maybe.
But I wanted the diesel so had to pay for it, he wanted 34k for it, we haggled down to 32k.
Now you go to redbook and they give it a value of 26k.
This does not reflect reality at all, you cannot find one like mine for that price.....anywhere.
People just keep their t/diesels longer.
Toyota sold way more v6's than diesels and the people who bought diesels most likley plan to have it for longer.
So you end up with so many more v6's to choose from, so prices fall.
        Cheers
        G.
        04' GXL 120 Diesel.

Red book is so out of touch eg 80. Series turbo diesel multi valve in auto with low klms are still worth over 25k if you can find a Mickey Mouse one, red book says under 15k last time I checked. Thing I looked at G when I bought mine is 10k will buy me a lot of petrol and extras but every one to their own choice obviously......cheers Steve

Mate as long as you are happy with the vehicle that's all that matters. Knowing you spent the time researching, got exactly what you wanted and got it for a decent price is icing on the cake.

When I was on the hunt for mine, I took my time, worked out exactly what I wanted and waited for the right specimen to come up. I must have researched for 6 months to work out what I wanted and looked for 3 or 4 months but when the right one came up I jumped at it. Basically bought it over the phone and drove 5 hours to get it. I know I paid over the mark, but it was worth it to get what I wanted in great condition and low km. I paid 34k for a 2005 GXL TD with 135k on it from a Toyo dealer. I guess you can blame folks like me for keeping the 'Toyota premium' going. But you'll thank folks like me when you go to sell (as long as you have looked after it). Totally agree that Red Book is out of touch on 120 pricing. My finance company actually questioned the amount I was paying for it, but once I informed them of the options included and the 'real market value' out there, they were happy I knew what I was doing.

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but along the same line: Mine had all majors services done by the dealer and oil changes done by the owner when I bought it. I'm not a mechanic but I am pretty handy and have often serviced my own cars (older petrol cars). I intend on doing most of the servicing by myself, and only major items such as timing belt will be done by an independent mechanic I know. I wonder if this will effect the resale value down the track. Anyone's thoughts on that? That said, I have no intentions of selling it anywhere in the foreseeable future.

I don't buy any vehicle with out a service history/logbooks as it harder to resell. As far as who services it I don't care as long as the books stamped AND their are receipts for the actual service. If its just a signature I wont accept that unless their is a business stamp and receipt. When I sold my hilux to a bloke that come up from Bega he said the only reason he got mine which was dearer then another he looked at and was in the same condition (which was excellent) he said it was due to my service history/receipts. I had 300thou on the old girl and had receipt even for wiper blades (rubbers) and every single receipt for all oil changes which were done either at 4 thou no more then 5thou with the date and klms it was changed at written on the receipts of the genuine Toyota oil filter.... I do the same with the prado........Cheers Steve

Agree 100% on the service history, prado i bought had the best history of literally thousands of cars i looked at, i do all the services on my dirtbike, keep each reciept for each part and a full log book with dates, klms, etc which IMO is almost as good if the owner seems legit, 10mins with someone and seeing theyre yard/house/garage/tools will tell you everything you need to know buying a 2nd hand vehicle of any description. May or may not affect resale depending on buyer i spose djnapkin, as an aside mate, i see you're location is bundy, how did you fare with the water up there?, im originally a born and bred bundy boy from over east, all family still there, 50% fared well, 50% fared not so well, just got back from a week up there cleaning up, shocking.

I am fine thanks. I live in Avoca on a hill, and very thankful for that. I grew up over north bundy however, so a lot of friends and their families were affected. People I know had their houses literally washed away. East was bad, made a mess of the place, but North is something again altogether. I'm not sure if you went over north but someone I know described it pretty well; 'it's like someone put the place in a jar of muddy water and shook the hell out of it, and then dropped bombs on the place'. I play hockey, it's over north, and the place was destroyed, the artificial surface we play on is worth $600k, it's a write-off, not to mention the clubhouse and equipment that went under. One of my colleagues was looted with all her jewellery stolen along with computers and tablets. Her house hadn't gone under, but her estate had no power for 9 days and was isolated, so she wasn't there. It's just unimaginable. Gonna take a long time for the place to recover that's for sure. That said it has been impressive how they have got stuck in fixing roads and services. The main road through north bundy re-opened today, and the bridge repair is progressing quickly.

                  Sorry to go so OT.
