  • Weber Q or Hillbilly Camp Oven with Gas Conversion

    Guy's/Girl's

I'm looking to purchase a gas cooking devise to use for 2 people during times of poor weather or when I'm camped in the ever increasing parks that prohibit fire.

    My requirements are:

    Regulated LPG gas powered
Lite weight and easy to store when traveling
    Easy-ish to clean
    Multi purpose

    Able to cook:
    Bacon and Eggs
    Steak
    Roast meats
    Stew

My short list is either a Weber Q 100 or a Hillbilly Camp Oven with gas conversion. Both have pro's and con's.

The Weber by all reports is great for roasting and as its a BBQ would do B&E and Steak without issue. However doing a winter stew could be problematic.

The Hillbilly will tick all the boxes but I'm concerned the gas usage could be excessive due to the exposed flame which would require some form of wind break, its expense at $400 and I think it may be harder to live with then a standard BBQ.

So, I'm looking for feed back from people that have used these 2 or something similar. How have you found them, after the first trip or 2 did you continue to take it or leave it at home to collect dust?

    Pinko,
I have the Webber Q and it is so easy to use, there is plenty of extra add ons to do just about everything. The only thing is to get the new style with the thermometer and the bigger lid, much better for roasting. With your issue about being able to boil a stew get one of the portable disposable stoves,They are very safe and the cylinders are cheep to buy.

We have and take the Q100 with us camping. We do most of our cooking on it. The breakfast plate isn't the best for bacon and eggs and it works. You can do stews etc in a cast iron pan that is oven proof. We cook pizza, nachos, barbecue (duh) etc etc. the weber is very frugal on gas too.

We have a baby q, it's a great little BBQ, awesome on gas, we actually use it for our home BBQ, but if you had the room it would be a great camping BBQ, especially being so efficient with gas

I've been looking at the Everdure Portable Buddy BBQ available at Bunnings for $199 :-

            http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_...bType=products

Larger than the Baby Q and cheaper too.

My vote would be the Weber Q120, we have one and its great. As stated Pizza, Steaks (best I have ever tasted on a BBQ), Bacon and Eggs (get a Coleman teflon hot plate, nice and thin and cooks really well and quick), Damper and stews (you can get a pot for them). The Q120 has the higher lid and thermometer and is worth the few extra bucks if space is not an issue.

Where did you get it from? There don't seem to be too many places that stock it.

You have to get it from a Weber Specialist Store, the weber site lists them all. You only buy the BBQ there and then get they rest if the gear (trolley etc) from DJ's when they have 15% off. Cheers Dan.

I got the small Webber Q100 with the temp gauge and taller lid and use it when caravaning. Recently bought a pizza stone and a vegetable basket.
I can recommend both the pizza stone, trivet and the small vegetable basket with taller sides, they work well.
Not that impressed with the cast hotplate, I don`t bother using it anymore, it doesn`t get enough heat into it. Well it does, but as you need to turn the food frequently, the heat escapes and it doesn`t have the capacity to recover. Maybe I am doing it wrong, maybe it works better on the bigger models. These days for pancakes or bacon and eggs, I just get out the single gas burner and use a frying pan.

It relies on cooking everything with the lid down and you quickly loose temp, if you open it too often.
But then with lid down and gas on minimum, it often gets too hot and burns food. Its not hard too work around that, just use the trivet with alu foil under it or just a bit of alu foil and put it on the side.

Anyway its a great bbq for travelling and gives you loads of options, its a very convenient size which is a big plus, but its not perfect.

As far as best tasting steaks, well I wouldn`t go that far, I do better on my big bbq at home, but for caravaning and while travelling, its very good.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

Yep you need to change your cooking style and not lift the lid all the time to watch your steak cook.

Well!!!!! I didn't expect that response so quickly.

It appears the Weber wins hands down at this point. But I'd love to from someone that uses the Hillbilly set up. Here's the link for those interested, http://www.campingwithhillbilly.com/campovens.php . When combined with my biji-barbi it could be a very versatile piece of kit in all situations (wood fire or gas powered).

Thanks to those who have replied so far, I'm convinced the Weber is a great thing, just need to convince myself its worth the space. In a perfect camping world I'd cook on fire all the time, but times are a changing and that just isn't possible.
