  • Another ex-jeep owner here, I also have 4 close mates who have owned Jeeps of different varieties. We are all now in Toyotas and will never ever EVER go back.

I suppose if you don't want to go anywhere past a capital city you should be OK... Good luck.

    • Never say never....the jeeps of today have come a long way since the early years, mine 2005 model not good but the reliability these days is very different.

      • Those leopards keep changing their spots, don't they.

Like anything from Chrysler, keep it for 2 years or until end of warranty, whichever is the shortest.

Chrysler is currently owned by Fiat. nuff said.

I don't agree. A friend of mine has an almost new 2 door wrangler, so far it has had the alternator replaced, 6 days in the workshop. Tried to take it out again two weeks ago and now it is overheating. Another friend rang me yesterday to say he bought one, but couldn't bring myself to tell him my true opinion of them. Which is when they are working they are great off road vehicles, the live axle equipped ones anyway. But they just don't have the reliability of the Japanese cars, and never will.

          • Saw one of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee getting towed from the Blue Mountains. The owner looked really upset. I felt like pulling over and asking "you bought a jeep...?"

            • I sold my 4L petrol 120 two years ago and now have a 3L Diesel Grand Cherokee , after 2years and 40,000k no problems (Prado was on third clutch by now, all replaced under warranty and two rear axle seals) The Prado is much better off road, the 3L Jeep diesel is a rocket on road. I use Albion Jeep for Service and no issues.

The only vehicle that ticks all the right boxes for us is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It hauls 3500kg and has all the comfort and features of the Prado that we want and more.

From reading other forums, I was surprised by the number of Prado owners changing to the new Jeep. The Jeep Grand Cherokee outsold the Prado in July and August.

Apart from some minor issues that have mostly been fixed, all owners seem more than happy with their new vehicles. The biggest complaints seem to be with Jeep Australia and their poor customer service.

Hopefully, we will have ours around the end of October.

Anyone want to buy a Prado 150 GXL D4D?

                Graham

                Graham,
One of my mates is looking at the same thing 120 -> Jeep Grand Cherokee.
It was a lot more bang for buck he thought but as you say the big unkown is reliabilty and service.
I will be interested to hear your feedback 3 - 6 months in. Hope you get a good run out of it.
Inspection will be required at the next steak night then in the carpark!

                Cheers

                • My wife is looking for a new car for the business and is keen on the Grand Cherokee's. I love the look of them, but am concerned about some of the stories i've heard. I suppose it's like any car. There'll always be good and bad stories, but the bad ones get the most attention. Looking to buy at end of year sales, then kit it out with some bling. I'm furiously browsing all the Jeep forums for ideas and information.

                    • Well the Jeep turned up a few weeks ago and so far so good.

It is certainly different to the Prado to drive - the controls are all different and it goes like a sports car compared to the Prado. Better fuel economy too. Haven't been off road yet - still too new!

The Prado has now been sold and goes tomorrow - sad to see it go.

                        • Jeep is ok if it suits.

Just remember to swap it when the warranty runs out or 2 years, whichever is the shorter. These are not Toyotas.

Here is a contender for Prado Replacement:

A bit dear new, but they depreciate fast. Probably not too bad second hand.

At $220k per unit, new I reckon they're a tad out of the average punters price range. ADF reckon they have a 15year service life. It will be interesting to see how soldier proof they are. Interestingly the average digger seems to like them. Having said that, they are replacing the Rovers.

                              The G 350 is only $158k!

They haven't been sold here for a while, but there should be some good second hand examples in a couple of years.

The AMG version is like $250k...

I very nearly bought an SLK earlier this year. They devalue faster than yesterdays young persons gadget. I baulked when I did some research on the servicing costs.
