    Wow. That's special.

Really sucks about the car being written off though. Is insurance covering it?

Welcome to our world. We get dudes flying in from Melbourne and Sydney to repair/service computers and office equipment. They arrive in Kalgoorlie only to discover they have a 1500 - 1800km drive ahead of them. "Nobody told us it was that far out." I laugh when they jump into their rented Pajero with only the one spare tyre and head out into the desert. They frequently stop me and ask for directions.

Sad to see a vehicle that I have spent many years and dollars on, go to the wreckers....
Not unusual, i have found this for a lot of city people , spoke to one dumbo in Perth once who was telling me they were going up to Monkey Mia to see the Dolphins one Saturday afternoon, i asked them do they realise how far it is , they thought the freeway went all the way to Shark Bay !

Feel sorry for you Jon must be a real pita

Hmmm. Be a good one to pick up cheap and replace the chassis with another. Unless it is a statutory write off of course! Wasn't a replacement chassis considered?

            Jon,

Sorry to read that your holiday has been cut short in such trying circumstances. As for the Prado going to the wreckers was there any mods or accessories the insurance co would let you salvage?

Jon what a pita this has become for you, again I feel for you mate. Not that it is probably the most important thing on your mind atm but I did notice a nice looking 150 with a bit of kit on it and stuff all kms for sale here on PP.It's only in Canberra too which is fairly close to you (once you get home anyway).

As this may become legal (also may have huge implications), I will not comment further YET.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Jon.

As mentioned by someone above, im assuming you are looking at an argument about Mechanical break down / wear and tear with your insurance company?

Best wishes, i hope something gets worked out between Toyota and your insurance company.

Sorry to hear things are not panning out mate. We all understand that you cant talk about it until things are resolved. Good luck and I hope justice prevails and that things work out for the best for you.

                      Cheers

Thanks, much better than the 76 series that I hired for the month it took to repair the Prado.

It's a real pain in the ass having to confirm your story before you talk to insurance as if you don't get the wording right you don't get a cent.

If you have the same kind of cover maybe you could get them to arrange a 4wd hire car & you could continue on to Sydney towing the trailer yourself. Just a thought anyway.
I have RAA Premium Plus. For anyone out there doing remote outback travel seriously think about the recovery costs if something goes wrong. $3200 from the Bungle Bungles to Kununurra(250km)

Also communications, thankfully we had a sat phone and used that. Will never travel without one now.

Of what you hit and what speed, just so people understand how easily it is to bend/break things in the outback.

The one thing for me on my whole trip from Adelaide via the Tanami, Gibb, Mitchell Falls Road was how defensively I had to drive to compensate for others reckless driving. We had 2 very near head-on collisions on our side of the road. WTF!

The guys at Kununurra Toyota told me of your troubles. Bad luck but it happens I KNOW!

I really don't want to put a dampener on any ones long trips but one bloke said to me "think about Risk verses Reward" he was traveling on the road to Port Warrender and turned around. He said too much risk. For me we brought the Prado and Camprite to do outback traveling. Unfortunately sometimes the 6 P's don't always work and "Murphy" takes over.

Just remember have a big slush fund to be able to cover your unexpected surprises. Fortunately for us we finished our holiday with a little detour on the way home to pickup and then run in the new motor.

                        Regards Adam

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and assistance.
The battle is with our insurance company and Toyota.
Will see what they come up with as I need to get this resolved ASAP.

Risk versus reward: if we never wanted to take risks none of us would venture out of the city in our fourbies. Shite happens despite the best planning, practice and preparation. Following my engine detonation last year at 73k I was really apprehensive about travelling across to SA for the GTG. But when I hooked up with the rest of the crew and started having fun I left all those worries behind me, until the return home where I pushed the limits a little but it all stayed together. Now I have just finished another 9000km outback adventure through some of the great deserts and harsh terrain pulling my camper trailer and with only the missus. We got through with some fragged mudflaps and 2 stone chips in the windscreen and I now have 27,000km on the engine. When I renewed my insurance this year I changed companies after asking some questions about cover for outback driving. I ended up getting a better agreed value and it didn't cost anymore than the previous policy. Jon - Good luck with your quest for a happy resolution.
