Steve I don't think he is serviceable any more. Nor is the house he was hiding in.

I'd be interested to see the EA4 V one of the Led lensers with the led lenser NOT on minimal spread, theres no way the EA4 is on a minimum spread pattern and it doesn't appear to be adjustable.

I have a couple of cheapo Ultrafire torches with Cree LED's in them, and for the money, you really can't go wrong.

          http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-Ul...9-p-40275.html

These were on special for ~$10 including postage when I grabbed one. Main thing I can say, it make sure you feed any torch good batteries, charged properly with a decent charger.

If you must go for the best, then...

            The nightcore EA8 - $68.59

            http://www.buyincoins.com/item/31966.html

I never bought anything from them so I can't say if they are good or not.

            http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/1...ode-860-lumen-
            Thats $69

If you have a little time, search on ozbargain.com and wait till a good deal gets posted on a torch you want...

            --edit--

http://www.fasttech.com/products/160...860-lumen-whit seems to be a non-branded version of the EA4, at half the price...

Yep that's the one Fido. I'm just about to order it, after seeing MJs photos I don't think you can go wrong for 50 bucks. Plus it's glovebox size & can sit next to my led lenser headlamp lol.

              Cheers

OK, but it is still no contest. Later.

Be aware on Whirlpool there are comments about the switch cover button thing failing on the EA4 when left in glove boxes in the heat. Cannot comment on that.

I gave up using Amazon, they never want to ship me anything I want to buy.

                EDIT:

OK it is now later, same camera settings as before, same lens too, 60mm f2.8 micro.

P14 opened up to the same width as the EA4

                The EA4 on Low

                and Hi

                and finally Turbo

It looks as though the P14 is wider than the EA4 but that is just because the EA4 still has a really bright centre whereas the P14 that wide has a more diffuse light.

Luckily only 3 possums exploded this time but one fell on a curlew and that is bad. Reminds me of why my Scout name is Curlew.

You can download the user manuals on the Nitecore torches from their site. Here is their information (prediction) on battery life. Guess it is the best of the best of AAs.

James unforunately not, they take a high capacity 3.7V and 2600 mah battery that is a fair amount bigger than an AA battery to get the runtime. But they do last for ages on low, I will get a 3+ days out of one of my torches easily on moderate use. I just charge it up in the car or on 240v then. On high it will run it down pretty quickly though at 1000+ lumens, but camping you dont need it that bright. Great for spotting rabbits though....
I found it was a fair amount brighter than some of the led lenser versions I tried.
As Dave said, they are also great to deal with here.

What's the bigger brother you refer to? Is it the EA8? I'm not sure I want to be responsible for any exploding possums though :-)

Thanks Gumboot, I've ordered an ea4 but will sus out these wolf eyes a bit more too, so far I think the police pro or the sea lion pro look like the go to me. You can never have to many torches, my swmbo says I have a gadget addiction, I tell her that people should just stop making so much cool stuff for me to buy lol.

                        Cheers

Yes fido the EA8. Fenix are supposed to be as good or better but no idea which model. I have been using the H7 on my helmet when I ride at night but the beam isn't long enough once you get some speed up so I also use the P14 or H14 on the handle bars. Think I might give it a go with the EA4 set to mid.

I used to keep it in a pouch in the door bin, maybe it got moisture inside it through condensation.

Any suggestions for a decent torch for the Prado? I'm not after something that will drop planes from the sky, just a reasonably compact torch for peering under bonnets, etc in the dark. My old torch is ~230mm long so something about that size would be good.
                            May be thats a alternative:

If you want something small, gives out good light, not too worried if you lose it, then these $4 jobbies are good for that.

                              http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-CREE-...ht_5796wt_1150

I bought a few and kept one in each car. Now the kids have been playing with it and some have been put safely away where I can't find them.

I certainly do like the EA4's mentioned in this thread. Will probably go for that when the P7 goes 'missing'.

Looks OK but can't be focused it seems. Then again I don't think the EA4/8 can be either.

OOOH, It's "anti-typhoon" too. Somehow I think they just might be exaggerating there LOL.

ETA: Found a good review of the EA8 :- http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...w-%288-4xAA%29
