Yep I read some good stuff about the ea8 last night too, but ended up going the ea4 instead as I think the 8 is just creeping up in size I bit too much for the glovebox with all the other crap already in it. Oh and also based on MJs awesome photos.

Did you read the comment "the ea4 is good if you want to light up your yard and find your pet, but the ea8 will light up a whole damn paddock." I thought that was a good one lol

    Cheers

Was that somewhere in the review I linked? I've just skimmed through again and couldn't find it.

Some of these torches have great light output, but battery life suffers.

I'm not sure Fido I didn't look at the link. It was a customers report on one of the sites that had them for sale when I was googling them last night, not sure which one though sorry.

Not many people had anything nice to say about the switch on either the 4 or the 8 thought.....I guess i'll find out when it arrives. MJ how did you find the switch on the ea4???

The switch is touchy because it uses a half press to cycle in and out of the modes. Not as friendly as the LedLenser switches but works ok. It is talked about like a DSLR shutter switch where half a press starts the gear working but it isn't as intuitive as that. It works though. The switch has a blue LED that flashes to tell you the battery voltage on startup, standby and when batteries are low. And when the coffee is ready. Apparently. This is tedious but no biggie so overall it's ok. The main complaint on Whirlpool was that the rubber boot on the switch goes soft in the heat and then bubbles up with increased air pressure in the torch because it has heated up. Guess I will have to suck it and see. The light gets hot in service which is a surprise. Bear in mind I have only had it for two weeks and used it last night for the first time to take pics. It is off teaching scouts stuff tonight, very clever for a torch.

I'm actually thinking of getting the TrustFire one Groeschel linked earlier :-
                http://dx.com/p/trustfire-x8-xm-lt60...-2x18650-57749

Under $40 and can be used with 1 or 2 of the included 18650 batteries. Only thing I'm not sure about is whether those batteries are the same size as regular AA so that you can substitute some Eneloops or similar if the batteries die. Reviews look good too.

if you only use them at night, the batteries will last longer.

Fido those Li batteries are 3.7V and a "normal" AA ranges from 1.2V to 1.5V so I doubt it will fire on AAs. Having said that some good reviews on the interweb.

You get that and #2 is planning to get an EA8 and we can compare.

                          Ah I didn't spot the 3.7v bit.

It would be like a Jedi light sabre battle! Imagine how many possums we'd need to replace after that.

What's the battery life like? I would have thought 3 emitters would suck a fair bit of juice. Had a look in the spec list but it doesn't say.

                                Now back on topic....

I received my Ultrafire bike light from DX this morning, seems to be a well made bit of gear for ~$40. It can be used as a headlamp as well and the headstrap is included. I'll test it out a bit more tonight as I'm not sure if the battery pack is fully charged, no instructions came with it (pretty typical for DX stuff) so I'll have to have a play.

                                http://dx.com/p/ultrafire-ssc-z7-900...x-18650-179543

I chose the AU Direct option as shipping is a bit faster, was a few dollars extra on the standard price.

Note: It comes with a HK type charger (the type with 2 short flat straigt pins). You can get an adapter off DX for < $2 but I already had one so didn't bother). Here's the type I have :-
