  • Recovery Gear

So the vehicle I bought has a winch fitted, but I'm starting from scratch for everything else.

Through the magic of google I found a couple of suppliers close to me.

Is this a reasonable kit to purchase:

    http://store.mitchellbros.com.au/rec...overy-kit.html

I also found that Supercheap has a range of air compressors at varying prices. Are they ok or am I better off going with something of known quality?

    What steve said.

Plus that kit doesnt even tell you ratings of the straps. They might be 11,000kg or 15,000kg straps which are too firm for a prado...
    Cheers
    Micheal.

That kit is pricey because they are made by an Aussie company.

The snatch strap is rated to 7,400kg Recovery Load Limit (RLL) and 11,100kg Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS).

The Eq Strap is rated to 5,400kg RLL, 8,100kg MBS.

The Tree trunk protector is rated to 8,000kg RLL, 12,000kg MBS.

The Winch extension strap is rated to 4,100kg RLL and 6,150kg MBS.

        The manufacturer's website is https://www.juststraps.com.au/store/...=Recovery_Kits

I bought the XTM 4WD Recovery Kit from Ray's Outdoors when it was $199 on special.

          http://www.raysoutdoors.com.au/onlin...=1022074#Cross

I haven't had to use any of it yet but the straps seem to be of good quality and the shackles, etc are OK. The carry bag is a good size and well made too. I think it's a good value kit considering the amount of gear supplied with it.

Since buying that kit I have added a hitch receiver and shackle, shovel, winch rope dampener, and 2 pairs of Maxtrax. Haven't had to use any of that gear yet either.

            No worries Steve.

Thanks for the replies and info so far.

There isn't an ARB for miles, but there is Opposite Lock. Are their air compressors decent kit?

All the straps I use on my car trailer are from juststraps.com.au and they are excellent quality. Have towed many times from Adelaide to Melbourne return on the same straps and they still look new. Customer service was also very good as I had most of these custom made and delivered to my door.

I've been on a LOT of day trips and can say without a doubt the most commonly used item is a snatch strap.

Beyond that, I commonly use an extension strap, d-links, chainsaw and spade.

However on two particular occasions I had to use EVERY SINGLE item from my ARB recovery bag. If any of those items were missing I probably would have been stuck overnight in terrible weather conditions.

New drivers could skimp on the kit and just buy the common items, but you never know when you're going to need more gear, and it'll be too late when it happens. Of course it depends on what you'll be getting up to

PS - I've been led to believe that Just Straps is considered the best quality straps around, so $450 seems fine to me.

The amount of recovery gear required would depend on whether you are travelling alone or with other vehicles.
A snatch-strap is no good unless there is another vehicle around to get you out of trouble..
I would go for the best quality that you can afford (remember, you are trusting a synthetic strap to recover a $60k + vehicle - not to mention the occupant's safety).
If you are unsure about what to get or how to use it, join a club and/or do a training course.

I do remember using a hand winch with a winch extension strap to get a Poojero up a steep hill, then used 3 snatch-straps and the winch strap to get the second Poojero up. I just drove up with no help at all in a 120 ( I was last in line...)
The Poojero owners were VERY dirty about this at the campfire that night! ( I gave them heaps!)
Sold the Prado. Now FJ Cruiser

                              Sounds like my golf bag.
