  • My engine just blew up and Toyota want $11k to fix it

My 2005 4.0L V6 went pop last week.

My local Toyota dealer has basically said it needs a rebuild. Pistons / rebore / main bearings etc.

Not got the detailed list yet but they have quoted me $11k to fix it.

The car has done over 230,000k and is probably worth about $15 if it was working.

I'm thinking of going it alone and getting either a replacement recond engine or having my local mechanic take on the work for less money. Not yet approached them.

Any ideas where I can get an idea of a replacement reconditioned engine. Google not providing much luck at the moment.

    Cheers

    Barry

      Cheers Graz.

I'll try and get an idea from my other mechanic on the cost of swapping it. Trouble it the original has LPG and I'm sure that'll cause issues / costs to rise.

Tempted to break it down for parts and sell on Ebay :-(

From time to time we all have these issues, my waist of money was trying to rebuild a 3L engine in which the rings would not bed. I threw $6000 at it (back in the 90s) and still it would not bed the rings.

Not to say you would have the same problems, but lets hope what ever choice you make works out for you.

Dunno why it went pop. Went from normal temperature to off the scale / engine light went on. I stopped the car and heard a banging noise from the engine.
On a plus point I have a new Prado diesel GXL I'm picking up Monday :-)
Just wondering what to do with the old car. Scrap it ??????

I would fix it with a nice sounding V8, then put off road racing shocks and springs in it with a few other mods, and start racing it.

Yeah, Very very tempting. I need a new project :-)

I think I'll store it for a while and weigh up my options. You got my mind thinking though.

So not the best service history? & cooked it?

I would find a good engine from a wrecker, untouched, & put that in, there are some crap engine re conditioners & mechanics, you want to avoid that.

                            What V8 fit nicely into a 120?

4.7 will fit nicely. as will a 5.0 and 5.7 gen3. The latter 2 will need more mods though
