If a car does not have low range gearing, then it should not be classed as a 4wd..... simple as that

Have to laugh at the poms including UK media. Every 4wd on the road over there they call a Jeep, even on tv news. My niece who had a Ssangyong needed convincing she didn't have a Jeep, that Jeep was a different brand.

Haha. UK "Jeeps" in Ireland too.
"Jeep" includes Rav 4's and Dualis.
I guess if you've got a real Jeep then it's a Jeep Jeep?

Other thing the media reports that gives me the irrits is "meningococcal" which is an adjective, not a noun.
Meningococcal meningitis, meningococcal septicaemia, even meningococcal disease, but not just meningococcal.

I should have put a at the end of my post as I was being a bit tongue in cheek!

Not sure how you class the Amarok then, it has an 8 speed box but no low range, aparantly a very capable 4wd from what I hear though.

          Cheers Andrew

I used to work with a guy who was doing up a "Jeep", when he finally finished it and I got to see it, it was a Hilux

                  Yair. Agree with the OP.
Still waiting for a news item saying something like "Elderly lady and her cute little dog run over by small compact sedan"
Not that I have anything against elderly ladies (not sure about cute little dogs).

I love how when there is a riot like yesterday on Manus island and previously in Macquarie fields , where people and authorities are injured and property damaged , they refer to it as a disturbance. Yet in Cronulla where not one copper was hurt and no property damaged it is marked down as a riot and one of the darkest days in our history. Figure that one out.

Knew it was a joke, so all good there mate.... The Amarok in that guise is not a 4wd, it is an AWD,

Even the motor journalists and even RACV NRMA etc don't understand the economics of 4WD ownership. For instance:
                          - NRMA & RACV say tyre costs are huge in 4WD ownership. Give me a break ... my Prado 90 GXL tyre life has been 90k, and I have replaced them at 90k ... the Grandtreks that came with the vehicle. There was likely 15k left on them too ... the vehicle now has its third set of tyres, the last put on at 190k ...

                          - Body life: chassis vehicles do not get squeaky and noisy with age, because the car shell doesn't absorb road stress. Hence the vehicles can enjoy a huge life.
--- Side note: In fact, if the politicians made it compulsory to be able to put modern engines into old chassis (ie if Toyota would sell a changeover unit contemporary common rail diesel / gearbox into a 90 series) then such a vehicle would have an immense life, which would be more environmentally efficient than the manufacture and scrapping of the short term tin boxes that people are being forced to buy.

                          - Safety: Prado etc are far safer in all but hitting a concrete block head on. Sideways safety is immensely safe - and even the crash tests do not accurately show what happens when a vehicle ploughs sideways into a Prado. The crash tests have a large ram than does not dive, and it goes straight into the Prado (or 4WD), which then rises in the air, normally eventually tipping over (and then the occupants often find themselves upside down). But the accident force goes below rather than into the vehicle. In reality, the vehicle that hits a Prado in a sideways accident will be braking, and hence it dives right underneath more than an intrusion test. Hence the intrusion tests do not show what actually happens in sideways 4WD intrusion tests ... And there have been no studies about human spacial issues while they drive that I know of - ie that in Prado (or equivalent) one drives close to your walking height. Which is the height you are used to. Sitting on the road is not normal. Safety wise, people's senses work better at walking height - cars are dangerously low, they should be raised IMO!!!!

                          - By the way, I think its poor the modern Prados are so heavy. Why not build the same strong chassis, but give us light weight body and design inside. Maybe a removable hybrid system for when you're in the city ...

                          I can only dream I guess ...
