Why is it when an AWD is in an accident it's referred to as a 4WD !!!! The accident that happened yesterday for eg it was an AWD Toyota kluger and a falcon ute. While it's absolutey terrible people were killed in tha accident and one is critical (I hope she pulls through) why say it was a 4WD. Same as the young boy that was killed out the front of the school just before Xmas, again while it was an absolutely terrible thing to happen, again "school boy killed by 4WD) it was a bloody Nissan Dualis.... Just gotta try and get that word 4WD in there don't they. Bloody wankers

Its a bit like when ever the story revolves around Earthmoving equipment, like the demolition of a historic building or the clean up after a disaster, its always a Bulldozer, even if its an excavator, front end loader or Backhoe, there all "bulldozers"
But honestly there are a lot of things about the media that piss me off way more than those minor irritations, like reporting on unsubstantiated claims about abuse from Navy personal as though there is some basis for the story, when the truth is more likely that people are crying foul because they didn't get there way.

If a few hundred write to the editor and say the same thing, it will be lucky to get 1 mention. The media are pathetic when it comes to sensationalising things. None of us are effected by the mistatement so none has an action against them.... unfortunately.Bitumen: A blatant waste of taxpayers money!

Because wankers do not like 4WD's. Now a lot of 4WD's on the road, but the majority don't go off-road.
Drivers complain of being stuck behind a slow moving 4WD, but not many complaints of being stuck behind trucks, vans, B-doubles and the like.
Many of the reporters are younger people (younger than a grumpy old bastard like me) and are highly opinionated, and because they work in the media, they can express their views, and force their views onto others, and because of this, the general population think that those views must be correct. (just look at what happened with the a*** licking media when federal Labor was in government)
As a retired detective, I spoke to many media people, from print, radio and T.V., so I had a wide range to converse with. Some were nice, and some twisted the truth. Media is defined by one word - SENSATIONALISM.
I will stop now before I write something that the Mods. might censor.

True dat!!!!
I am quoted in the media from time to time. Well, should I say misquoted.
4wd's are slow? I find myself continually frustrated by small vehicles in front of me. Usually driven by younger, older, asian, non asian etc.
Even more frustrating is those lkittle cars cutting you off, then doing under the speed limit. And they have ago at 4wders....
Someone should legalise self defence driving where I am allowed to use their battery of wheels as a speed hump.
mlc -just getting started.
Edit, I think the sticker on my rear window that is anoput 1 meter long sums it up. It says:
W A R N I N G
Does not play well with small carsBitumen: A blatant waste of taxpayers money!
Try Driving a truck, I regularly pull out from a standing start straight onto an overtaking lane in a 110 zone, it takes me a while to get the old girl wound up to speed and every car just has to get past me, even the guy the other day who I then sat behind doing 60kms/hr until the next townOriginally posted by yowie View Post,Even more frustrating is those lkittle cars cutting you off, then doing under the speed limit. My truck has a bulbar and in instances like that surely it should be legal for me to use it

Many aspects to this one.
Yes the media do sensationalise a lot of stuff - its a business after all. "Never let the facts get in the way, etc...."
The bigger commercial operations are most guilty of this, but then again, so are the people that patronise these shows, newspapers, magazines, etc. Without an audience - no show.
How many people watch Today Tonight or A Current Affair regularly?
How many people regularly buy The Daily Telegraph? "Is that true, or did you read it in the telegraph?"
What keeps John Laws, Alan Jones, Ray Hadley, Andrew Bolt, etc, etc, etc on air and very well paid?
The cops are not innocent in all of this either. Ever noticed when road trauma is reported theres always the tag line "Police say that speed was a contributing factor". This gets trotted out even when its blatantly not the case. Additionally, theres always a bit of back scratching going backwards and forwards and if we're being honest, cops NEVER like to be told or shown they're wrong.

As a detective, I was never wrong. Maybe an error somewhere, but never wrong. hahaha.Originally posted by Beach View Post. Additionally, theres always a bit of back scratching going backwards and forwards and if we're being honest, cops NEVER like to be told or shown they're wrong.
I spoke my mind at times, sometimes to the annoyance of senior officers, but I didn't follow the party line all the time. I was more concerned with looking after the concerns of the junior cops.
And I did find a few nice reporters to talk to!

It comes down to the manufacturers, as they call them 4wd's instead of all wheel drives. There needs to be a change in the classing of a AWD, lead by the 4wd industry.Originally posted by Steve M View PostWhy is it when an AWD is in an accident it's referred to as a 4WD !!!! It does stand to reason though; that if a car is an all wheel drive, and it has four wheels............ I guess it technically is a 4 wheel drive!

I've worked with plenty of journo's that don't take kindly to having their *ahem* writing skills and "fact" checking questioned or corrected. Its really bad now as kids just aren't taught basic English and writing skills in school.Originally posted by yowie View PostAs a detective, I was never wrong. Some of the best cops I crossed paths with professionally were crusty old sergeants and seasoned detectives outside metro centres. Sadly thats not the case anymore.Last edited by Beach; 18-02-2014, 07:15 PM.
