  • XP's Demise

Any advice on what to do when they pull the plug on XP in April ? Should we sit tight or upgrade ? still quite happy with XP and grudge paying for something I've all ready paid for ( XP ) .................

Stick with it till you need to change. Unless for business, then are you happy to go without support or virus patches? The company I am with have just finished moving to Windows 7, 10's of thousands of PC's involved. Ok once you get the hang of it. I wouldn't go W8 unless you have touch screens.

      Win7 FTW.

For the PC's we have left on XP, our clients are just waiting for the PC to die/become too slow/software won't support it anymore then upgrade. No huge rush to replace them. If it ain't broke....

Avoid windows 8 like the plague, I have it and hate it with a passion. I yearn for the good old days of XP, that was sooooooooo much better.

Lies, you cant run XP on your 486. Windows 3.1 is not XP AJ, just saying......

            Buy a Mac.

Windows 8 sucks. Gadgety, toy thing meant to impress people who like shiny things. Our work PC's have been rolled back to windows 7.

Our work has been slowly upgrading as required to win 7 from xp as things have needed.
Not keen on win 8 at all.

No it's worse than that, it sucks the sweat of dead men's balls!

The whole apps thing is just plain stupid, even in the desktop mode heaps of things just work stupidly.

Just one example, downloading photos from my camera. With XP I could select the folder I wanted, name the pictures and ask the computer to delete the pictures from camera. With win 8, it makes a new folder every time, no option to name them before the download and the auto delete from the camera doesn't exist.

There are at least 3 totally different ways you need work out in order to print a document, XP was just right click and print.

I could go on but I am getting the urge to smash my computer just thinking about it.

                  Cheers Andrew

I started using computes with MS DOS 6, but I now have 3 laptops - XP, WIn 7, Win 8.1.

There's no compelling reason to go to 8.1 with 9 coming next year.

I tolerate the 8.1 laptop because it just has so much more grunt than the win7 or XP devices and I can't be bothered rolling back to Win7. The XP laptop is 8 years old and only exists to run Techstream (plus I got the laptop for free) so dont care about the updates. I'll just disable the internet access.

I would suggest going to Win7. I love Win7. Its actually a good operating system and is bedded in now. We rolled it out to 1000+ PC's a few years ago, and hardly anyone had issues learning to use it. We're now waiting for Windows 9 which is rumoured to allow boot to desktop, the return of the task bar and the shutdown menu.

I honestly don't mind 8.1 that much - I just go straight to the desktop and most stuff is fine in there. To find apps/programs is easy, just type the name from the start screen, (press Windows button, start typing) but that's how I use Win7. I don't us the start menu at all anymore. But I don't see the point of the tiles as I don't have a touch device.

I find the device management more painful but that's because 8.1 is trying to be an Apple OS and do all the thinking for you.

I have played with 8.1 on a Sony Vaio with Touchscreen and I can see the attraction. Sometimes is just as easy to touch the screen to do things than it is to use the mouse eg select a word in a document.

I think you guys need to take a Bex and have a lie down. You can do everything you need in 8.1 desktop mode. Granted if you don't have a touch device you can stick with Win7.

I bet you all buy the latest phone/gps/gadget when it comes out but you still XP lolol

Its the stuffing around you have to do to get to the desktop. Then when you open certain programs it jumps back to the bloody app tiles and you have to stuff around again.

I deliberately don't buy the latest electro gadget, as most are just shiny things for stupid people.

You're using it wrong, 8.1 has default desktop mode.

                              So I'm told.

IT Knob: "Hmmmmm....I don't know why its going back to the tiles. It shouldn't."

Me: "Yes I know it shouldn't. But, just like magic and typical for windows, it f@#ks up. Please just install windows 7 so I can get this device doing something close to living up to its promise and intended purpose"

IT Knob: "Are you sure? Eight has some really cool stuff..."

Me: "Do I need to get violent?"

                              IT Knob: ........
