Me: "Do I need to get violent?"

      IT Knob: ........
      HAHAHA, Love it.
Where I work it's also like this:
Client: I want Windows 8.1, it's meant to be so much better.
Me: Why, Win8 is terribly inefficient, especially in the work place.
Client: But Windows 8.1 is newer and 2 versions ahead of 7. I don't want old technology.
Me: No, it's 1 version, 8.1 is not a new version, it's a fancy service pack. Just because it's newer doesn't make it better. You want reliable technology that helps you get your work done, not make you slower.
Client: But surely Microsoft have got it right now after Vista.
Me: No they haven't. It's terrible and you'll hate it.

Windows has been and continues to be inherently unstable and unreliable. Its the reason we have over bloated IT depts.

I used that in a Windows XP demo back in the dark ages of the early 00's. I had a slide about how stable XP was, set the timer to auto progress to a screenshot of the BSD so it faked a crash. Oh how they laughed...

                      Computers are like air conditioners

When you open Windows, they don't work.

I personally use Ubuntu. Seamless updates,no need to reboot after every one. Comes with M$office comptable suite. NO VIRIUS that I have ever found.

But best of all, it's free. The only thing I have paid for is my Canon printer drivers.

                      Cheers

That's a gross generalisation but whatever floats your boat.

                          XP's Demise

The whole apps thing is just plain stupid, even in the desktop mode heaps of things just work stupidly.

Just one example, downloading photos from my camera. With XP I could select the folder I wanted, name the pictures and ask the computer to delete the pictures from camera. With win 8, it makes a new folder every time, no option to name them before the download and the auto delete from the camera doesn't exist.

There are at least 3 totally different ways you need work out in order to print a document, XP was just right click and print.

I could go on but I am getting the urge to smash my computer just thinking about it.

                          Cheers Andrew
ordered my PC with 7 and they supplied it with 8. In the end i took it back and made them put 7 on it and reload all my other software.

Windows 8 is like they let the loonies loose in the Development department and told them to make a program that no one over 19 can work.

Start button has been bottom left forever, why change things that work?
Shutting down? Just pull the power saves all the BS.
Why bury the admin account so you cant do basic changes yourself - yes i know its there but i had to go looking.
                          Long list of stupid changes...

I too hate it with a passion

Windows is kinda like a 90 series prado vs a 2014 porsche, you can tinker with one easily enough, the other is just dangerous to touch for fear of breaking something!

As I am Gen X and know my way around a computer from age 10ish, I have no problem fixing/tinkering in windows settings. This is why I like windows over mac, I'm my own IT department

                              RIP XP!
Personally, haven't used it used it for ages, since w7. W7 will be my main OS till it becomes new XP or w9 is better than w8.
Installed w8 on my table just because it got a touch screen and tried to keep up. Rarely have to touch it.

IMO - you can stay on XP so long as you've got antivirus and are behind firewall and not clicking everything . Last thing is very important.- I used Firefox, noscript and adblock+. I reckon for most people it will stop popups/ads and reduces the attack vectors. And backup. That way, you can do restore, when you need it.

Maybe but there's also a gross amount of truth. If that wasn't the case we wouldn't be having these conversations. If your 4wd behaved like windows, how long would you put up with it?

Would you fly on a commercial aircraft that ran on windows?

"This is your pilot speaking. We just have to turn the aircraft off and on..."
