  • Blown D4D 3.0 turbo diesel engine

Hi Everyone, I am new to this site and just want to let you all know about my fantastic experience with Toyota.
I own a 2010 GXL Prado 150 turbo diesel that i purchased new in January 2011, i had racked up 106000km on it without any problems then one night i was on my way home from QLD back to NSW and it stopped, the cause was a hole in number 3 piston. I contacted the dealership that i purchased the vehicle from and they told me not to worry as this is a common fault with this engine. They vehicle was out of warranty by 1 month and 6000km and they have covered a complete engine rebuild including bottom end. I am over the moon with the way the Toyota dealership has performed. Cant beet a Toyota!!!
Has anyone else had his issue with the D4D engine?

    It's not called a D 4 Destruction for nothing....

To be fair it happens with all makes/Brands of common rail engines, some more than others.

At least Toyota came to the party!

Which dealership admitted it was a common problem?

Lying bastar$s. They admit to nothing. When mine blew @ 73,000km - 2 weeks after they serviced it - oh, it must be dirty fuel. Then it was you must have been doing something wrong. Then it was we think there's a problem with an injector. No actually, there were holes in two pistons. Then they couldn't find my extended warranty. Then they only wanted to replace some of the bits. 8 weeks later the insurance paid for a new short motor and 2 injectors to replace the faulty ones. They are as inconsistent as the WCE.

Yeh they might have fixed it, but I wouldn't be happy paying that much for a car and then having it blow the engine in the first place.

Not a common problem with these engines, just a problem with the injector setup. When they finally take ownership of there mistake then you can say "good onya Toyota". But while they keep palming off a design flaw as bad fuel or whatever they have lost a lot of credibility. What Toyota should have done in the first place is do the clearance checks properly in the first place and the seats / sheets whatever you call them would be changed out and this problem would never occur. Once they found out a few had blown up, then like the rest of the world they should have come the party and fixed the problem for all of them. Then there "reliability" status would not have been questioned at all.

            Not the first!

My D4D holed a piston back in 2009. It was not uncommon back then but I thought that the "new" injectors fixed the problem. Apparently not so. Reminiscent of the Nissan ZD30!

Seems this goes two ways with Toyota.
                1. If you are under warranty it is a "Common problem that they know about and they fix it"
                2. If you are out of warranty, "no issues with the D4D", so you must have got a bad batch of fuel and you foot the entire bill for a new engine. Only if you have extended warranty joker card do you get out of jail and they pay, but they seem to do the bare minmum to fix.

There is enough of this happening that people are calling into question the reliability and fit for purpose the D4D engines.
You would think for a vehicle maufacturer like toyota that have spent literally decades building brand perception of tough, unbreakable, reliable etc etc that they would spend the money to make this a non-issue. For it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch and sometimes perception is the bigger issue and harder to put to bed.

                Cheers
                Robert

                  I had 2 Hilux SR5's before I bought my current 150 Prado.

Both Hilux's suffered diff failure. The first one was at 40 000km - Warranty, no probs. The second Hilux failed at 110 000km and I got the "no warranty, too bad" response. It seems that they (and I) forgot I actually bought an extended warranty.
After forking out $1100 for the diff overhaul, I found my extended warranty and made a claim against Toyota Finance for reimbursement. They did pay up but it was a bit of a fight.
I think it really depends on your dealership, and the relationship you build there. I thought I had a pretty good relationship with my dealership, till this debacle, but they have been pretty good since I returned (once more) to buy a Prado.

With all the issues that toyota owners have when dealing with some of their dealerships and unprofessional attitude to various issues when approached,
one would think that Toyotas senior management would get off their collective arses and sort out their dealerships and design flaws ASAP-especially
after their safety recall debacle in the USA.
