Instead of having different trim levels, make it different levels of off road ability.
EG- Toorak level (Bog standard with no off road ability and super low profile tyres for all the soccer mums)
Tourer level (for those that go lightly off road and tow vans)
Off Roader (for those that actually take it off road)
Extreme (with all the fruit for real 4wding ie diff locks, big tyres, bulbar, winch, roof rack, awning, etc.)
and a minimum of 250kw out of the motor
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

Standardise the wheels on GX/GXL's so that both variants use the same rim(GXL) and save both Toyota and the customer money in the long term.

I would change the electrics so the car uses much less power in standby so you can listen to the radio with the car off for more than 20 mins. As some have mentioned - particularly important at the drive-in!

Well seeing that I had a vent of my spleen elsewhere suggesting staying with the 120 series if faced with the choice, I should be constructive.
Many of the things that have given me the irrits have been mentioned here already. Most notably thebigo's number 6. the daytime running lights needing to be redesigned. Anyway, I'll go through my suggestions in the misguided belief that a car designer might actually have a look at what consumers have to say.
No particular order.
Headlights - do away with the daytime running light and incorporate a series of led's that circle the headlight. I'm not personally happy with the Edna Everage glasses look of the headlights. Something could be done about that.
Seats - could provide front seats that have better support all round.
Bull bar - Toyota could have a genuine steel bar ie the 70 series.
Cruise control - that works down to 25 kmph. those coppers turn up in the least expected places and I'd rather be sure I'm at the limit than just bumping above it as I pass a road worker.
Drivers mirror - flat glass please. I want to see what is approaching from behind and I want to see what my trailer, boat, van is doing as I'm reversing, rather than squinting and guessing.
Instruments - Less led display and bring back the buttons. Not keen on the glare that reflects from them however infrequent. More analogue dials in preference to all the led display.
Behind the front seats - Get the rear to fold down flat!!!!!!! Toyota have taken a @#$&ing great amount of space from me in the move from the 120 to the 150, the least they could have done would have to have got it flat!
Get the 2nd row of seats to lock vertically. Design the rear to support weight - as much as the vehicle can safely hold. Get rid of that silly power point and replace it with a 12 volt outlet that can run a decent sized fridge.
Rear door - would like to see a horizontal split. As others have pointed out there are issues with spare wheel and fuel capacity. Possibly a redundant suggestion is regards the stupid rear wind deflector/wiper housing. More like a dirt collector, but I'd rather have the wiper at the bottom and have a better wind deflector, what the 150 has now is ......rubbish.
More clearance....yes please
breathers.....yes please
Interior storage - If Toyota are going to going to put storage spots in the vehicle then make them large enough to do what they need to do. Glove box - what is with a "card holder"? Glasses holder - I have a head bigger than a 10 year old's thanks. Drinks holders - What about all the Iced coffee drinkers? Why bother putting an air vent into the center console?

Thanks Toyota designer for taking an interest.

Everything previously mentioned plus some additions that would be pretty cheap to include at manufacture:
Dimmable interior lights for centre console (radio and such)
Have spare wiring/plugs in harness to pick up acc power or power behind dash rather than having to cut into existing looms.
Power to rear with an acc fuse box setup.
Would add what $50 to manufacture costs??

Oh.... And a warning light to tell you that you've forgotten to strap the kayak down (Oops. Stopped at the first intersection wandering "what the hell is that noise...?" when it magically appeared on the bonnet)
2010 GXL D-4D: "TO INFINITY AND BEYOND"...... What?? Yeah, yeah. After I've done the mowing....
2" Outback Armour lift, dual battery, TJM bar, Winch, Fyrlyt spotties, Snorkel, Hancook RT03's or Pirelli Scorpions (depends on what I'm Doing), roof rack/awning/lights/water tank, multiple scratches and one small dent in bonnet (tie kayak down next time)

V8 D4D as per the landy Ute.
35 inch wheels.
better clearance than a FJ.
NO BUILT IN Nav unit (what a complete toss when they want a fortune to update and Google maps and Hema apps make it look pathetic. Prefer space to add what you want.
Dual battery as standard
And a less electronic option for the those that want reliability in remote places over the Mummy comforts of the shopping trolley version.

TUFFIN UP TOYOTA.

Hahah yeah Ice Coffee drinkers need a good holder for the 750ml Ice Break. All the rest is spot on.

I have to add another one

8. Door lights and interior lights that switch off after 5mins regardless of situation. In the past month alone I have had to flick to my second battery to start the car because of stupid door lights.

If the 3 kids jump out when we get home and don't shut the door hard enough it stays ajar leaving lights on and flattening the battery. Or we had the doors open one morning packing the car for a camping trip and I turned off the interior lights but those effing door lights I forgot about and after car and trailer packed, 3 ticked off cranky kids and a missus yelling how much longer I jump in hit the key to the dreaded clik, clik, clik. Hence the above option 8.

I'm pretty sure the 150s interior lights go off automatically. I have converted ll mine to LED so I doubt they would flatten the battery anyway.

And another thing-as has been covered on another thread:

Let us use the dial pad for the phone (cause you're making us use the phones one anyway I've been told) on the satnav screen AND if a passenger is sitting next to us, let them enter an address on the satnav!

Update the donk, up the towing to 3 tonne and up the warranty. Doing all this while keeping it bullet proof thanks. Asking much? Well for the price I think we can.

Effective mud flaps. New rear door design that doesn't collect dust to drop through the interior when opened. Water deflector or similar to stop water running from the roof and dropping inside the vehicle when side doors opened. Properly calibrated fuel gauge. Fuel tank breather that allows 'filling to the brim' without air locks. Gearbox that doesn't surge/hesitate between changes (improved but still noticeable after re flash). Drive shaft that doesn't bind/clunk. Better injector design.
