LMFAO moreOriginally posted by REN470 View PostHi,
I agree with Tassie Tiger - all this talk is a bit rough, in fact I don't know why some people on here buy Toyotas as all they do is bag the dealership, the service department and the D4D engine, yet they own one and some have bought more than one - doh. I always take mine to the dealership but I also sell my cars regularly so most times they are still in warranty but from my experience my dealership is great, never had an issue with warranty but just a hint into the mindset - Now I work in the Bike industry for one of the big ones and our technical and warranty manager always looks at known service history when a dealership calls in with a major engine issue like detonation, even before he contacts the customer - no service history and he's on the defensive already.
Now I had a mate who ran a workshop and he had a really annoying customer who marked things, checked everything before he would pay for proof it was done and they would just pull out his filter (no dropping of the oil) and replace it with a second hand one they had pulled off another car and cleaned up and sent him on his way just because he was offending them with his absurd requests - what do you do then stay and watch them actually do the work?
Argh what do you do.........

LOL love some of these replies !!! I must say I have had the prado into Kingswood Toyota (near Penrith) for some warranty work when I first bought it (second hand) and must say there work was excellent with bullbar bracket replacement and alignment, and warped discs that they had to machine (they only had to do the front and they did all 4)..... I personally think the big dealers have improved out of sight since I worked at one (26 years ago)..... Maybe this fixed price servicing may have me returning the new one for servicing. We will see what it is when we get the new one......(my issues of trust can certainly be verified with some of the dodgy work that has been done on my prados over the last 8 years admittedly not dealerships but certainly well known after market suppliers and fitters).....Cheers SteveFace lift 150 Prado V6 auto. Yeah but the point is not everyone has been bitten first they just mistrust a mechanic because they can. This thread stared with a guy who thought his air filter was dirty after the service even though it isn't scheduled to be changed? And his oil was black - in a diesel, really, we'll they must not have changed on mine either even though I waited for the car and saw them pour it in cause mine was black like his when I got home.Originally posted by tassie tiger View PostBut did Lionel make you feel better. Hello - Champ.

For me I'll trust my dealer as they have always done the fight thing by me.
Just wondering if the mistrusting also check how much fuel goes in when they are at a servo - how do you really know? How do you know when you buy a 500ml coke that it's actually 500ml?

I've been burnt before.. Had a mechanic leave sump plug loose.. It came out doing 110. Looked like a bomb went off behind me... Same mechanic left 6 bolts loose that holds a cover on under the drive shaft... 5 completely came out on a trip to Balina from Gosford.. I heard a clanging noise, got under car and there was one bolt holding this plate on with about two turns left of thread. They rush, they cut costs... Dodgy.

Thats a whole different ball game to what your initial complaint was which was a criminal act of theft.
Bodgy hopeless mechanics - yep, they are out there and they suck.2009 120 V6 Auto. 265/70/17 Goodyear Silent Armours. Bilsteins and Kings Springs.

So yes in a previous life I have had experience in a large mechanical workshop, It wasn't shonky but I could certainly see how a lazy person could get a job and do less then he was paid for.Originally posted by tassie tiger View PostAnd you can imagine this based on what Andrew?
Have you worked in a large workshop? A large dealership? Was it a shonky one? .....................................
But, the this type of talk is pretty poor. Slag off an entire occupation on your gut feeling or the fact that you are convinced that things were not done on your vehicle once.
As for slagging of at the whole industry, maybe take a chill pill on that one
As I have said I trust my mechanic and never check his work as years of perfect service from him has earned my trust.
On the other hand I have had bad experiences in the past and I choose to mark a filter and check things are done when getting services done by an unknown workshop. I've had my Prado's serviced in Alice Springs before doing the Oodnadatta Track, Broome before crossing the Tanami, Cairns before heading to the tip and back across the Gulf, Broken Hill before heading to Camerons corner.......... It seems to me to be just plain common sense to check over the workmanship of an unknown mechanic before heading to remote places like these.
Anyway, I am not telling anyone they should do this, I am just saying that if people do then I think that's OK, if your mechanic is upset by you checking then maybe he's not the mechanic for you.
If you were looking at a second hand car and the salesman said it was in good condition would you inspect the vehicle or get it mechanically checked? Surely all salesman are also honest?
I really don't see what the big deal is here, if you trust your mechanic as I do then that's great, if you trust everyone in the world then that's even better, if you pay for a job and you want to check its been done then I cant see how anyone can have an issue with that, unless of course they have something to hide!

So what does that prove? Your mate is willing to rip of a customer just because he doesn't like them? If you cant deal with a customer then politely tell them to take their business elsewhere, don't charge them for a job you didn't do, especially something as potentially expensive as not servicing an engine.Originally posted by REN470 View PostNow I had a mate who ran a workshop and he had a really annoying customer who marked things, checked everything before he would pay for proof it was done and they would just pull out his filter (no dropping of the oil) and replace it with a second hand one they had pulled off another car and cleaned up and sent him on his way just because he was offending them with his absurd requests - what do you do then stay and watch them actually do the work?

That's what I said I would do, politely ask them not to come back.Originally posted by AJ120 View PostSo what does that prove? BUT, for example when you become a p.i.t.a to people in businesses, I can see them doing these things, not just mechanical, it's the way the world goes plenty of that. Like have a winge about some crap food when your eating out, & they might slag on your replacement. Mark that! Lol.......
And don't be confused again, I know your not talking to me, you not talking to me ever ever again, I know that

I'll post my reason for not trusting the Toyota guys.
I had my Hilux in for a timing belt change. Got it back and there was a horrid clanging sound - not real loud, but to me very noticeable as I know the sound of the car very well.
It took a week before I had time to get underneath to have a look, but I had my suspicions - and I was right forst time. The harmonic balancer had not been bolted up properly and was flopping around on the crank.
Tightened it up myself and went back to them to complain and asked them to pull it off to check for damage on the crank (had a similar problem with the power steering pulley being loose on the shaft and flogging it out). Said I wanted photos as prrof for both them and me as to the state of the crank just in case something should happen in the next year or so.
Guess what they did - nada. The belts did not get removed, there was no photo as it "was all good, no damage" and they cleaned the car for me. What a load of crap. This is not the first time that they have made a mistake with the car - I actually wonder if they are actually competent enough to do vehicle work and wont be burned by them again.
So when guys here are suspicious of a service, I would tend to think that they have every right to be so - I know I don't trust them at all. I am sure there are good guys out there, but unfortunately for them there are others that are giving them all a bad name.

Different to blatant rip offs though.
I have seen & experienced it way too many times. It's why I won't be tempted to buy a new vehicle or in warranty.
Silly really.
There are many incompetent mechanics & easily distracted & forget things & it's really far from ok.
That's a great reason not to go to them.
