Not sure of your car's radio, but I had a 2012 VDJ79 LC for work and the factory stereo sometimes wouldn't connect to my S4. I had to dig deep into the bluetooth settings in the radio and delete the stored phone(s) in phone and in media devices. Then pair the phone and media device (as A2DP sees the one phone as two devices) and then it would connect every time after. The op manual for the radio was a bit vague too. There's also a limit to the amount of devices that can be paired.
Did you ever successfully pair it before?Silver '04 KZJ120~Manual~GXL~Dobinson/Kings lift~Custom valved Ironmans~Detroit Locker~Endless Air~X9 Superwinch~Madman EMS1~TJM Dual Battery~Rhino Roof Tray~120W solar panel~Foxwing awning~Bushskinz UVP~Long Ranger water tank~Bushman fridge~Steinbauer P-Box~Beaudesert 2 3/4"~Airtec Snorkel~TJM Sliders~Prico Boost Gauge~BFG-KO2s~TPMS~GME TX3420~Front and Rear Cameras~Ultimate Camper hanging off the back!

It works!!
I had a service yesterday at the Toyota dealer. One of the office workers is an IT/audio nut and he came out and set up my S3 phone and my wife's iphone.
Both now work with music and hands free. He just made sure all software was updated on the phones, cleared everything and started from scratch. adding one phone at a time. It was my mistake all along because I was picking the wrong option when the unit was asking me "phone only" or "int. music" in the options.
