  • Just smoked my trailer lights

    Hi guys,

As some of you know i just got a prado 08. It has a narva 12pin plug at the back and an anderson plug.

I was asking if i should change the 12pin to 7pin like my trailer but was advised i could use the same plug.

So when i hooked it up to thr car, lights didnt work too well, started of dim and got brighter and then smokemstarted coming out!!

These are LED lights by the way. Am i getting too much current into them? Im going to take it to an auto sparky, but any ideas what went wrong here?

    Thanks

TP all you can do is test the lights. You can buy a trailer plug that lights up with the appropriate lights or do it by multimeter or testlight. You need to work out what has gone wrong and were the fault lies. First step is to test the plug on the car and check that each pin is doing what it is supposed to. If not then you will need to trace the wiring and work out what is happening. If the car is ok then check the trailer. Sounds like one of the circuits has shorted to earth and I would suspect that it is in the trailer. No choice but to have a detailed search.

You would need a significant over voltage to smoke the lead lights, therefore
assuming all was well before connecting to the car the most likely area is possibly
an earth fault of some description causing wiring to over heat.

Other possibility is if lights have reverse polarity protection and the batt and earth are reversed?

All guess work I'm afraid with out be able to be hands on.
