  • Winching out under load

    Evening folks!

I'm going winch shopping (again) and I'm trying to find a winch that will let me power out under load. I.e. winch myself back down a hill (or winch someone else back down a hill).

I've spoken to a few reps from different stores..as far as I can gather, only some Warn and Tigerz11 winches have the abiity to do this, does anyone know of/have had experience with winches that will let you do this? Apparently the planetary gearing inside most winches doesn't permit you to winch out under load?
I understand that its a fair task to ask of a winch but IMHO it's something that I need my winch to be able to do!

    Cheers,

You can winch out under load, just a little at a time and allow the brake to cool as your driving the winch against the brake.

A winch is not a hoist, they not designed to winch out under load. As mentioned above the brake will get hot. It is probably ok to do it a couple of metres. What situation do you need this for?

My old TJM OX hydraulic winch would do it, and I had to do it on one occasion. I don’t think they make them anymore. Still got the winch sitting in the shed. I went with a bigger one when I set the 200 up

Won't be for competition use or anything, is purely so if I'm heading up a hill and have a need to go back the way I came with my nose pointed up (aka reverse), I can do so with control. Brakes only work so well if you're on a slippery clay hill..being attached to something solid (such as a tree) and being able to winch myself down is something that would be pretty useful. Same applies if I'm parked on top of a hill and need to 'let a mate down'. Currently we just spool off most of the cable/rope, attach an extension strap and drive forward to achieve this, being able to power out under load would be nice.

                      Regards,

Agree with Sandstorm, would be a great function to have. If they can't be done with the current winches what other options do we have?
