  • Prado Fire ~ Gunbarrel Highway~

So a work colleague sees me pull up to work in the Prado today and says..... "Hey, I've got some photo's you might be interested in......"

"Sure!" I say back to him, "Why not...."

These photo's were taken somewhere along the Gunbarrel highway. The people involved were part of some sort of mining expedition. The cause of the mayhem wasn't known for sure it seems. Suspected was the buildup of spinifex grass around the exhaust. I note though that shot #4 appears to show a distinctly bent up bullbar in the middle. Nevertheless, on your next trip through the spinifex grass...... think again.

      Apologies everyone.

I had a hunch we'd had something similar before actually but I couldn't find the thread. I'm sure we've had a burning Prado before too, but I wasn't sure if it was these pics or not. Sorry to all if it's a rehash.

I hadn't seen it before. From a little smouldering to a downright inferno! Shiiite! Clever to leave the doors open... which reduces the risk of exploding glass.

Makes me wonder whether you want an on-board extinguisher, which would possibly leave you with a slightly smouldered truck or let it burn and leave it to insurance.

Been posted before. But can't remember what kind of topic name it was posted under, hence search wont work..

Thats why we have the rule about posting under a meaningful topic name.

                Great Pics.
That fire was out on the Canning in 2006.
A few friends of mine went through not long after she went up.
Was due to owner not clearing out spinifex regualy along the trail.

                Ben..

Thanks Iron-Paww, hadnt seen those b4.

Wonder how long it took to go from smoke to ashes.

                  That black smoke looks lethal.

Yep ok Mods. Sorry about the repost. I do realize we shouldn't double up with stuff like this.

What happened to the alloy rims? Melted? I know the fire would be hot, but that hot?

Looks like in the first pic he emptied the last of his water onto the fire?
Hmmm, what a dilemma... save the Prado in the hope to drive home, or conserve your drinking water to survive?
Or maybe just throw your last remaining water on the fire - to no avail, watch your Prado burn to the ground and slowly die of dehydration whilst you wander aimlessly in the outback.
At least he took some good pics...

You can see the steel bead wire around the front disc. Its amazing how hot tyres burn. With smoke like that hopefully people would see it and come, not needing the water, but it would certailly be a delema!!!

Might go check my fire extinguisher.

Not spinifex, the bent bullbar is the key. Looks like it was caused by hitting an object at speed dead centre of the bullbar splitting the auto trans cooler and pissing trans fluid on the hot exhaust.

Hmmmm the dilemma of the empty water container. You'd have to assume that the firestarters saw some smoke, whipped out the water container and tried splashing it up underneath in an attempt to put the fire out. Worth a try I suppose, if you had the water to spare that is.

Blkmav90 I think your assessment might be close to the mark. Looks like a significant hit to the bullbar there smack on dead centre. Nothing in the pics suggesting what was hit, so maybe they tried limping home causing things to really heat up.

I don't see anything left of the rims. Looks like they just........ burnt????

Of course the other theory could be....
Upon attempting to load an Abba CD in the player, it exploded rather than being embarrassed to that degree. Hot plastic gobs flew at all the occupants causing their clothes to catch on fire. They stripped and threw their burning duds out the window (see pic 5). They grabbed the water container and poured it all over the dashboard hoping to appease the peeved remains of the CD player. Not having a bar of it, the rest of the vehicle caught fire rather than risking being alive if other 4WD's ever found out what had happened. As the car began burning, the naked occupants got out and removed all the alloy rims and ran off into the bushes with them. Later, a very perplexed passer by in an akubra came to offer assistance. However all that remained was the melted remains of a CD wallet and the sorry remains of a Prado. Fernando strikes again it seemed........
