You may just be wasting your money and carting around excess weight with 2t axles and springs and mechanical brakes. You need to check your state regs but you may not get a 1500kg compliance with over ride brakes.

Running heavy springs on a light trailer also is not a good idea, it will bounce all over the place, get the springs suited to the weight you expect to carry.

As a guide, a normal 6x4 trailer goes around 250kg, the hydraulic tipper I posted in the first page of this thread is 380kg, that's with a double chassis for the tipper, pump, ram, battery etc.

    Cheers Andrew

        Hey Andrew,

Are you able to tell me the length of the axle?

You raise a good point about the weight, our horse float tends to bounce a little empty.

Have you got any design / drawings on your tipper?

        Cheers,
        Kevin

Down side of a tipper is mates you never knew you had come out of the woodwork! One of the reasons I put a Treg hitch on mine, oh sorry mate but you haven't got the correct hitch so you cant borrow it

          Cheers Andrew
Well Gollieeee, it just so happens I'm a mate you know and coincidently I have a Treg hitch!

            Axle length here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post293464

No I don't have any designs for my tipper, I usually do a couple of rough sketches on the back of an old envelope and them build things as I go. The geometry for the tip mechanism is complicated, I just nutted that out as I went. I did build another one for an old employer of mine and it was certainly easier having mine to copy from.

            Cheers Andrew

If you use bikes for camping, you could put struts on the front over the drawbar to put bikes on.

Sadly RAGE Enterprises (Rough As Guts Engineering) no longer does trailers. Any more and I would have to register as a trailer building business...

Good timing, finding this thread as i have to replace an old trailer as well , that carried dirt, sleepers, mulch, moved stuff, tip runs, etc etc

                    My thoughts
                    - 5 x 8 Gal
                    - Has to be able to carry 1M3 of dirt or sand, dual axle
                    - smooth floor instead of checkerplate (have carried lots of soil /mulch in the past)
                    - front and rear removable tailgates
                    - tiedown rails on all sides
                    - High sides
                    - Half mesh cage
                    - Long drawbar
                    - Removable H-Rails to carry longer stuff if need be.
                    - LED lights
                    - Prefer Prado wheels to keep it all the same.

Anything thing i might have overlooked? As hunting for some places in Brisbane to build.
                    Cheers

DO35 hitch. Makes it easier for me to borrow.

After using a friend's trailer on the weekend I'd suggest asking them to make the front/back tailgate hinges have one pin 2-3cm longer than the other one. This makes it a lot easier to put them back on - you can get one end in and then the other end. If they are the same length you have to line them both up at the same time.

Funny, I'm about 1/3 of the way through building a trailer in my down time at work, and have been debating if I should spend the money on the DO35.......

Oh, for those playing at home it's a 7x5ish single axle braked trailer, good for a 1.0t payload once done using either 4wd Hilux springs or 79 cruiser springs, not sure on those either yet.

Would use a treg over the DO35 on a camper.
Our camper is treg, caravan DO35.
Prefer the treg offroad as it has a poly block, doesn't get effected by dust / mud as bad and no need to raise the drawbar to hook up.

The treg on camper has been all over Australia for the last 17 years and still in good order. Cape x 2, Center x 2, Gibb River, Mitchell Falls, Tanami plus many gravel roads.

On the springs i am using 60 series front springs and 60 series rear shocks. Grease able pins and rubber bushes.

                                Rusty.
