I used to use avg but just found it to heavy on resources. I've used both avast and malware bytes for friends and family with good results.
My own PC doesn't actually use any third party software. Just windows defender. I don't use Internet Explorer. I use Google Chrome. Also have popup blockers and ad disablers. With some privacy extensions also added. Been like this for years now and so far no issues this is obviously not the safest but it works for me.
My only concern has been emails so far. But in pretty damn selective about what I open. First off, I open all emails from good sourcew. But any unexpected attachments from them has me reading the full filename. If it appears OK... I save it and goto it's folder in Explorer. If is a picture, then it will only get opened if the preview shows up. But then I'm still selective... If my dad sends me a file labelled Fender wiring diagram... Then that's good to go. If he sends me a link wanting me to join Google docs so he can share important files... Nope. No. Nadda. Not on your sweet bippy.. I will look at the link address though. Not the one displayed in the email but the one that coughs up when I right click and goto link address.

Didn't want to say it for fear of being flamed, but I am the same - Been running Windows defender since Win7. Running ad and pop-up blockers, don 't use IE, don't visit dodgy sites, don't open unknown attachments, unknown source emails get binned straightaway, check links before opening, Hardware firewall in the router locked down as much as possible.
Used to use Zone Alarm and AVG before that but they started giving me the you know whats

Don't touch AVG or anything that is free. No such thing as free. And AVG can be hijacked by adware spyware which often goes unnoticed.
MS built in security and making sure all updates are installed is all you need.
If you get a virus it's because your downloading shit your not supposed to or blindly opening email attachments.
+1 for chrome, you won't get infected with this as it sandboxes everything. My entire business is built around it and has never had an issue IT wise in 7 years. Can't believe it and all associated Google services are still free for early adopters.
