Thanks Stu, I have been chasing down prices on a Auto GX 5 seater this last week, can get a 1KD motor for around $53500 mark [NSW] if I want white that are in stock, but they are reluctant to give me price on the new 2.8, I figure an extra approx$1000 maybe.
I am undecided if I should take the old model or go with the new motor, it would help if the dealers would give me a firm quote. Hopefully the new motor will not experience the issues known to the 1KD.

    • Toyota confirms downsized diesel for Prado.

Worst kept secret is now confirmed by Toyota. This is now on carsales.

        • I assume that they mean the cam chain is being replaced by a belt, otherwise it doesn't make sense

I read it as timing belt replaced with timing chain which makes sense to me. Have I missed something? Seems to be norm these days with Toyota engines. No more timing belt changes. The chains are designed for the life of the engine they say.

They say that about the ATF fluid too, yeah right!

That's how I would have spelled it.

                  • I am just jumping in on this thread. Is this new Prado just with the new Hilux motor 2.8 or does it come with a whole new look too? Because I haven't seen any concepts for the new Prado.

But the particulate filter is not a good thing for the owner n terms of maintenance right? I would like to know how they work and what the negatives are. Probably been discussed elsewhere but not a bad thing to bring up in this thread.

                            • I know of a few vehicles with DPF and some good and some not so good experiences. Definitely a mate with a SAAB had no end of trouble and it wasn't the usual lack of highway running. On the other hand #1 son had a diesel car with a DPF and the light came on before a major service (programmed to do that). He didn't know what to do and as he was close to home just drove in and then read the book which said don't stop! But mostly it was drive for 10 to 20 minutes above 80kph. Luckily we have a stretch of 80/100 within minutes of home so he and I drove the car out along that road, within a few minutes the light came on again, then flashed and then went solid. Did the necessary run and in maybe 15 minutes the light flashed and then went off again. Mentioned what happened when it was booked in for a service and the response was that the computer asks for a burn at that time because the DPF would be typically 60 - 70% full and if a burn didn't occur there would be no problems and it would be cleaned at the service. Son's was all clean and all good.

I can only hope that given the time these things have been around our experiences will be the latter not the former. So I don't fear the DPF.

                              • There is nothing to fear in the DPF, gone are the days of a performance exhaust though. We'll be running DPF back systems at best to stay legal. Use the right oil, read the owners manual and do the right thing and no problems what so ever. At least that is my experience with them in Hino and Isuzu trucks.
