  • Take care when towing

Poor bloke, got bogged then got whacked by a broken tow strap

Flying tow strap hits teen in head after 4WD bogged in Castlereagh
    By Megan Levy
    July 13, 2015, 7:04 a.m.

A teenager suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck in the head by a flying strap while his bogged four-wheel-drive was being towed in Sydney's west.

Saw this on the news this morning. It serves as a good reminder on how to recover vehicles properly...there seems to be a lot of advocates for the "go hard or go home" method, which can clearly lead to very dangerous situations.

    Slow and steady...

The kid was in the drivers seat and it hit him from behind. Poor sod. I wonder if some kind of damper was used? Good advert for getting some proper training.

It is they bystanders that scare me. I copped abuse from the bystanders on Fraser when I asked them to move back trying to recover my mate who was bogged on Fraser on Cornwells Break road towards the beach.

It can be very dangerous the way some "tow".
I think it was more of a big snatch, they mention others had "tried to tow it" journalists words I think.
I towed a vehicle yesterday, & there's no way your ever going to break a decent strap with a gentle tow.
I have & sure others have seen straps break, usually it's a rotten old well used & or a quarter mile take off.
These sorts of people are dangerous to themselves & others, no sense at all.
Young people & inexperienced, just never been explained the dangers of such cool simple recovery tools.

        R4ndll,

At least you did you part, I think it's the recovers responsibility to make sure it's relatively safe.
Anyway we can talk about recoveries all day & there are so many variables.

        Poor bugger.

Not sure how a snapped strap makes a shackle fly through the window.

It seems more likely that the shackle or whatever it was attached to gave way (broke), almost certainly on the vehicle being towed.

As #### mentioned it's likely to have been a big snatch. I know this play area and it's not the first time that a vehicle has been so badly stuck that multiple 4WD's were unable to snatch or winch them out.

I'm thinking there must've been something solid attached to the end of it - a snapped strap alone wouldn't cause that much damage surely? I can't help but think that perhaps they've tried to snatch off the tow ball and it's snapped?

still just as dangerous in regard to a cable/rope breaking, but a lot to be said for a slow careful winch out, rather than a snatch if it is avoidable?

Maybe they joined two straps together with a shackle. It looks like a long way into the "puddle".

This would explain the broken strap and the shackle.

The story looks to have been updated, they suspect the shackle or strap

You better believe it, I punched a hole through the back door of my Patrol towing another car (work Hilux) when the bridal snapped and let the snatch free from full stretch, it hit dead centre above the tow hitch, and punched a fist size dent the wasn't repairable (new rear doors) which just the end of a normal strap. A shackle like the ones still attached to the Hilux would have made it into the rear of the second row seats easily. At head height you are dead.

                            Freak accident my arse...

How many people have been killed or seriously injured in recent history, in serious lack of thought, or - as #### puts it "1/4 mile" recoveries.

I'll stand corrected! Turns out in this case though a shackle was involved.
