  • New laws covering light bars in Western Australia

DOT WA has just issued a bulletin (6th August) allowing an exemption for the use and fitment of light bars in WA. ADRs stipulate that additional headlights must be fitted in pairs but this inadvertently prohibited the fitment of light bars, hence the issuing of the light bar exemption (valid for 3 years).

Casual observation of where most light bars are currently being fitted would suggest that most vehicles could be considered unroadworthy.

Below are examples of what will be legal and what wont, so if you have a light bar anywhere on top of the roof or above the front edge of the bonnet you might be in a spot of bother.

    Legal

    Illegal

What happens at the end of the 3 year exemption period remains unclear.

This has come up elsewhere and is reported to be a hoax? There is nothing on official sites.

Well that will pretty much kill off the 30, 40 and 50 inch light bars then in WA if you want to stay legal as you wont be able to fit them on the roofrack or top of bullbar. Most bullbars would only fit a 20inch or maybe a 30 at a squeeze between the vertical supports I expect

            Cheers

I think you will find that it has always been illegal to mount lights of any sort above the bullbar or on the roof racks. ( in VIC anyway )
Its just that the police have no interest or dont really care that you have them up there. In Victoria it is odd to not see lights on the roof or on top of the bullbar on a 4x4 Be them spots or lightbars.
But never ever hear of anyone getting booked for it though. But i did by a dirt bike cop out in the bush. He gave me a slip to put my car over the pits at the RTA. I spoke with the inspector and he said yes it is illegal but i am the first he has seen put over the pits for it.
So unless some nut in power puts out a memo telling the police to enforce the law i dont see anything changing ?

I can see them cracking down on the lightbar on top of the bullbar. For pedestrian protection

Unless the regs for the max height for mounting spot/driving lights has changed over the last 30 yrs in WA the max height aloud was(is) 1.5mtrs.
                      Cheers.

This is still correct, allows for spot lights on trucks, agricultural vehicles, etc.

A friend of mine was recently pulled up at a roadblock near Mansfield, he said there were vehicles with illegal light bars lined up on the side of the road, according to the policeman checking his vehicle, they were all getting around $370.00 fines!

They should be fined if they were used, same as foglights - get a fine if used when there is no fog or poor visibility but OK if turned off.
