  • Dust in the back

We are just home from trying to do the Darling River Run north to south. We got as far as Idalia Station and the owners came to us and said that it was going to rain and we had better get to Wilcannia onto the bitumen because all the roads would be closed. We did go to Wilcannia and it did rain and all the roads did get closed. So back again in 2016 to complete it.
BUT my problem is the amount of dust that is getting into the rear of the Prado. It is coming in through the grill on the driver's side at the rear near the door. So much came in you almost need a shovel to get it out. How is it coming in and what can I do about it?? Is there a way of closing that off??
    Thanks for any help..

Sounds like you've lost a seal/grommet or there is dust getting in via a wiring loom. Does yours have the dual air-con? If so look at where the pipes go in behind the right rear wheel. Also look for missing bolts under the carpet for rear seats if they've been removed. Always run the fan with the switch on fresh air to positively pressurize the cabin. This will keep dust down to a minimum.

Yes, mine has the separate air-con in the back but as there was nobody in the back it wasn't turned on. I'll certainly look at the wiring looms and bolt holes for missing bolts.

Check where the trailer wiring comes through into the section for the jack. I had heaps of dust and found they had just cut a slot in the grommet to pass cable through. Ended up removing each grommet then sealing with sicaflex around edges of grommet .

Some of the dust may sit on the top of the rear door (outside) and work it's way inside.

You mention your vehicle is a 2004 model, also some of the rubber grommets may have split over time.

I still have dust washing out of the back of my 150 from a March/April trip to W.A.

Do you leave the aircon on fresh. It helps to pressurize the cab and stop the dust.
Also on the 120's the airvents on the rear are low in the bumper bar and if the rubber flap is missing dust will enter.
The rear door on our leaks as well and will need some 'caps' over the lock pins on the toolkit.

From the day we purchased it you could smell fumes and then the dust. Toyota said they couldn’t find any problems.

Fumes are an issue with our prado muffler shop found no issues and I sikaflexed all the rear grommets and added some sealing from bunnings to the rear door and still an issue only happens under load up hills foot down
Maybe those flaps are next on the check list do I need to remove rear bumper to check?
