Regarding how much oil was left in the car, if the oil pressure light was lit then
the pump screen was above the oil level and the pump was starved of oil, ie
no oil being pump through the engine.

Still if they use magnatec or similar it is very sticky and as long as the car
was driven far under load hopefully no damage was done.

Don't trust dealers to do it, get the oil out of it in 5000k & send it away.

If it comes back ok, forget it ever happened.
If not you choose where to go from there.

By the sounds of it all oil was lost, but they don't want to say it.
I've never seen a 1kd-ftv sump plug washer split & I see them looking like they are re-used a lot also.
Yes that is my feeling too Antho, that oil was lost but they don't want to say...... They have agreed to change the oil in another 5000 k's, and I really want to get that oil tested... I will either have to watch the pull the oil out the truck or go to an independant to have them do it... I work with HV electricity so oil sampling is something I am familiar with as it is used as an insulator and for cooling, but I have no idea of the process when doing it for vehicles... Can anyone give me an idea of the best way to do this?

This is the one thing that gives me hope that it will be ok.... The missus said the red Genie bottle light (missus's technical term) came on for about two seconds then went off just as she was getting on the freeway, then came on again for another short time, like another second or two, then off again... Then about four k down the road the engine light came on (funny orange squarish thing) ... Ha. Anyway at least the oil pressure light wasn't on for a long period of time, but I don't know exactly why or how this could happen if very little oil was in the car.
And it was downhill and she backed off a bit (she said, but she's abit of a lead foot normally) so hopefully engine wasn't being heavily loaded.

          You can be lucky.

Then your rego is noted on Toyo system, anytime you have a warranty the big nobs come out & inspect before they ok the repairs.

Are you really sure some dealerships servicing is ok? Or do you mean some dealership must have a good technician somewhere?
There are some techs that are good, just you odds are getting them are bad, the odds are the kids will fix ya truck good

A lot comes down to the who's in charge, the foreman at my dealer takes his job very seriously and has always been very professional with me.

Yes the oil has additives, magnatec = ( fluff & goo, that's marketing hype) they have zinc & it will adhere to parts to help with cold start ups etc.
Sure there is still protection, some engines run for weeks / months with no or little oil, so chances are it will be ok.
I have seen some crazy stuff in my time in the trade, I'm pretty confident it will be fine in comparison to other oil starvation issues.

But a new vehicle, having this, it makes me feel sick when I put myself in the o.p position. This will often be on your mind, right?
They could easily have given a new car & sold the usedy & not lost$ , everyone happy, well as much as possible, that would be great service & them thinking about the customer & not themselves. so..............

This is a hard one. Years ago I had an ex track 3 series which was a 'bit' low. I scraped the sump a couple of times (probably on grains of sand on the road or something huge like that) and the sump split. No visible leaks before hand though I did see some staining at home on the garage floor when I looked more carefully. So it had been dripping for a little while. Anyway driving home and the oil light came on. Shut down as soon as I could but I was under heavy load at the time and I feared the worst. Towed the car home. No oil on the dip stick and very little dripping out of the split. That weekend I dropped the sump off. No oil in the sump other than a few little puddles. I assumed the big ends were shot. So with the car on stands I started removing big ends. All measured up fine and there was no scoring. I weld repaired the sump and added a piece of abrasion resistant steel over the lowest part, luckily it was a steel sump. I took the rocker cover off and the cam bearings were fine as well, lobes were ok too. So I put it back together and filled it with oil and took it for a drive. No rattles, no noises that I didn't want. I only used the car to and from work for a fortnight anf then dropped the oil and sacrificed the oil filter. No filings, no issues. I was very lucky. Hopefully you are as lucky.

Although the dealership seems to have done the bare minimum, I believe that they should be named as this will some how get to them and they can understand the perils of doing a poor job. There better chances of VW customers getting their money back than this fellow for an equally big blunder. First service and this disaster there has to be a similar lemon law as in US (I have heard a bit about it but bit have not seen details of what it is) that gets you a new vehicle for a major fault or such stuff ups. Just my 5c.
D4D. How long will it last?

Young Motors in Geraldton mate , there will be people out there who hate us for what ever reason(but thats life) , but i came back a couple of years ago to sort things out and get the team back to where it needs to be, which sometimes means paying for things ourselves just to keep people happy and sometimes upsetting the boss with my training costs.

We had nearly the same issue with our family commodore many years ago. We were 100ks into our trip over to south Aus when we saw some oil on the driveway of my grandparents place. Checked the sump plug - 1/4 of a turn was all that was holding it in place. The Holden dealer's excuse was that the apprentice had done the job...

I've had zero issues dealing with my Toyota dealer. They do a good job (as far as I can tell), they charge a decent price, and the service manager is always happy to walk me through what's been done or listen to my concerns. They're not all cowboys!!!

                                Hi Bear,

Can you tell me if you are able to detect the presence of an EGR reduction plate when doing a normal service without pulling the motor apart ?

One indicator would be the oil is cleaner but I wonder does it show in other ways.

                                thanks
