  • Work bench height?

Building a workbench for the garage, I have got the basic design in my head, however is there a reccommended height for the bench? or is it whatever you want?
    All feedback appreciated

Whatever works for you. I have a high and a low bench, depends on what I am doing to which bench I use.

It depends on what you see yourself working on, but generally between hip and elbow height is a good benchmark (~800-900mm). When I was working on PC's, I found that 700mm was perfect for me because the PC cases were around 150-200mm wide, so I could still lean right over the top of them comfortably. That bench had a fluoro light mounted at 2100mm to give lots of overhead clearance, but it's too low to be practical as a proper workshop bench. I knocked up a heavy duty workbench for general tasks but built that at 900mm. A good height but I can't lean over that one if I need to. If I need to do that, I can stand on something for a bit of extra height.

Googling "Workbench height" turns up a stack of useful info

It depends how tall you are and your health. I.e. I'm 6'3" and a dodgy back so I prefer a high bench so I'm not bending over as much.

Just measured mine, I have a 910 and 730. I tend to use the 730 more.

Mines 900mm with a shelf mid way up, works for me. I would suggest putting a small lip maybe 20mm high along the back. Nothing worse than a small nut/bolt etc rolling off and going behind/under the bench.

I have two in my shed.
The old original one is at 900mm
The new one that I built is at 860mm.
They both are fine for me, just depends on what you are working on. I do prefer the 860 one. Will take a photo if you like.

Think about mounting/working height of a vice or grinder also.
Myself I prefer a higher .9m-1m work bench with adequate lighting a must.
                  Cheers

I built mine at waist height.
Sometimes it's to tall but it sure beats stooping over a low bench.

Mine is a real old home built one dad threw together 30 odd years ago and it stands at 939mm's and one I purchased from the local hardware that stands at 840mm's,depending on what I'm doing I use which ever one fulfills my requirements and find both are comfortable to use.

                      Cheers.

I can feel this morphing into a 'show me your bench' thread

Nothing wrong with tidy. A tidy work place shows an organised mind.
Yes, I'm an OCD neat freak too. That looks great to me. #mancave

                              Guys
thanks for the feedback, it looks like around 900mm is the go for me any way.
D4Ds workbench has inspired a case of bench envy.
My old one (dating back to 1920s) was wonderful but did not fit in the new garage so went to my brother.

                              Regards
