  • 4x4 Mat Recommendations

    Hi all
I'm after recommendations on 4x4 mats. Any recommendations/opinions would be appreciated.

Who uses them? Are they more comfortable than a swag?
I currently switch between swags or Oztent King Goanna stretchers or both, but worried the stretchers might wear a hole in the floor of my new Oztent - the little plastic covers on the legs always come off and expose the sharp ends.

Any downsides? Packed size is pretty large...

Also hate air mattresses - are these much better?

    Thanks

Looking at possibly buying a Wanderer Mat 4WD Queen from BCF this week - normally $199 down to $149 at the moment

      Anyone got one of these?

I bought the wild country queen size 4x4 mat from Rays when they were $139. Absolutely the best thing for camping, or staying at someone else's house. (Heaps better than a bouncy air mattress.)
Easy to set up/pack up (though, with the queen size you really need 2 people to roll it up). It takes up about as much room as my swag when rolled, and fits perfectly in my 3 man dome tent.

I have a Wanderer Mat from BCF for the Mrs. She loves it. Considering we both can't sleep on air mattresses its the next best thing to taking my entire bed out there. I will be buying another for myself before my next camping trip and telling the old man to get one as well.

I don't put it on a stretcher or anything just straight on the ground and it's comfortable all through the night.

We use single Dune Mats in our Oztent after the wife refused to put up with another night on an air mattress. 10mm mattress rather than 5mm foam in the cheaper swags so more comfy than swags or hiking mats, but less comfy than the sprung mattress and eggshell topper in the camper trailer. All of which are infinitely better than the coleman double air mattress. No re-inflating in the middle of the night, no issues with movement making the other one seasick. (Get your minds out of the gutter)

The kids have managed to put holes in both of our dune mats and they're still comfy to sleep on, but a PITA to get out of the bag as they now inflate inside the bags. I've found one leak, the other continues to avoid detection... TBH haven't put much effort in finding it as it doesn't affect us that much.

I've heard of some struggling to put them away but its v easy for me.

We are about to buy swags for all of us and do away with the Dune mats. When we are not in the CT we can just sleep on the swags inside the oztent, so no point in having both IMO.

                Thanks for the replies

Ben21 any idea if the bag on the wanderer is water/dust proof?
Wondering if I can put them up top...

Fairly certain I'm gonna go get one or two this week - I have a bunch of BCF vouchers from credit card points coming in the mail. Spending spree here we come...

We have the RV5 as well. Still tossing up whether to get a queen or two King singles for the two of us. What does everyone else think of the partner disturbance factor?

I vote get the queen, think of it as payback for all the disturbances while you're trying to watch the cricket/football/AFL/whatever, plus it's only one thing to pack away rather than two.

I had thought of the doubles too, but want to leave some room for other gear
Does this leave you with much spare room?

                        Thanks for all the replies

Ended up with two wanderer King singles on club sale tonight for $166 instead of $298

Better half said she would have preferred the queen size so she could take 80% and leave me with 20%, so I went with the King singles

                          Hi Geege,

I wouldn't think they are dust proof but I have only used it twice so far.

I can have a look when I get home from work and let you know my opinion.

It's all good Ben - they're not dust or waterproof, but because I got the king singles, they'll probably go in the back of the car anyway

If I decide to put them on roof racks, I'll have to look at sourcing different bags - maybe canvas swag bags or I was looking at a Rhino roof bag

I use the wild country 4x4 single. When you wake up in the morning, you'd expect to be a little sore when camping but nope! It's brilliant... I woke up all rugged up one morning when it was -7 that night and I was in heaven.

The foam acts as an insulator so you don't get as cold as with a blow up mattress. I'm pretty heavy (around 100kg) and I don't feel the ground under me.
