Have a 36v ryobi. Never looked back. Easy start, low maintenance, versatile power source, apparently does 550sqm, and... The wife loves it. So I have a beer while she enjoys the novelty ;-)

Vote 1 for John Deere JS26 self propelled with 6 hp Briggs engine.
Safety feature of engine shut down when releasing the dead man lever can be a PIA, but always starts well after.
Bag catcher and alternate slasher Shute attachment.
      Cheers

The Minister for Finance has given me permission to buy a Honda...out of her income.
I'll be looking to get their "Base Model" Domestic mower: http://powerequipment.honda.com.au/Domestic/HRR216PKU
I had a bit of a play with one at Masters on Saturday. Although there was no fuel, pulling the cord had a pleasing smoothness to it, and everything sounded solid. Not sure I'm a fan of the dead man lever thingy, though a cable tie might fix that...also, not convinced on the "Mulch/Bag thing either...but it may be handy?

Just have to find the best price...I think my current mower has a few cuts left in it yet, so there's time for getting the price right.

Mate if looking at the base model get the snorkel kit to go with it........for an extra $40 odd dollars it's money well spent mine had it as standard 196hru from memory and the air cleaner is spotless inside......it was shit getting past the filter that killed our old mower as the element was down on the motor in the dust and crap
            Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....
            22'' Lightbar......

I think thats what has killed mine. 10-15 years with the air filter at dust/debris level.

I'll look into the snorkel. unfortunately those with one already are well out of my price range.

This could also be an option - basically same mower, made by victa with a hard plastic catcher:

Honda do a genuine snorkel for all their models mate about $40..........when I bought mine I was going to get the base model also then asked about the snorkel because I saw it on the other models and the salesman went and grabbed one to give to me and said the kit fits all the range.......then I saw they had the upper spec model with one already fitted on sale for not much more than the base model.....so being the sucker I am grabbed the one on sale!

Yeah Victa looks good mate......maybe that's what I should have got myself although the Honda does have a 4 year domestic warranty......I honestly can't see myself using it though.

Hoping to duck into the local mower shop, talk turkey and get a good deal on a mower. We have a place that sells Hondas, and a place that sells Victas. I'll see who can do the best deal!

So I don't think I'll get a Honda. The salesman wasn't very interested in my business.
In fact, he went on to say that the "domestic" range were no good as the Japanese had designed them and, in his words, ruined them.

I went to the Victa shop and the guy there was far more helpful. He explained the differences between the steel and alloy chassis versions. Was willing to research the snorkel kit for me, and even though it was 10 minutes before closing actually wanted to help me out. Unfortunately, there were none in stock, but the guy showed me the Briggs and Stratton version (same chassis and catcher, different motor). It looks far better built than the Honda equivalent.

He was willing to do me a good deal on the Victa with the Honda motor

Whats the weight of those things? I'm thinking of ditching the Victa 4 stroke for something lighter. I have to carry the bastard up half a dozen stairs to the back yard.
