  • Carrying Firewood

Going away this weekend, and will be carrying in some firewood friday night (save searching and cutting some when we get to camp after work). Does anyone have any tried and true ways to carry firewood? The roofrack is likely to be pretty full, and i dont particularly want bark and bits in the back of the Prado.

    Current thoughts are:
    • In a milk crate on the roof (if theres room)
    • Wrapped in a tarp somewhere in the car

In a trailer for the amount you'll need for a day or two it would fill the back of the truck
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

i cut it and split it and put it in a bag in the back wrapped in one of those cheap boot liners from Bunnings.
i bought a couple of bags of wood now just recycle the bags.

You could but a Tvan, they have a firewood rack in the back....

Sorry, nothing useful to add, you have it covered.

For one night, just buy a couple of bags. $20...? Maybe less if you're lucky. Comes in bags ready to go, no mess, chuck em' wherever they fit. Can buy them from a servo if you're real desperate, but will be more expensive.

Helpful Hint. Hahaha. I dont think I have time before the weekend to get me one. Maybe next time.

I might have a spare 50 L plastic tub at home (with Lid), and I've realised that now I have a swag, I wont have a tent/sleeping bag/mattress in the car - so there might be much free space!

I did consider buying some, but I have a big box full of already cut wood for my outdoor fire at home. I'd rather use what I've collected rather than pay for some.

I bought a couple of large plastic gardening tubs, about 30 and 50 litres, the ones with the carry handles. Mainly used for gardening, but also good for stacking and storing cut wood. Just don't throw any large or pointing chunks into the container, as they may split.

I use the old hessian sacks tied at the top. Easy to throw up on the roof rack and throw down again and when empty can use for a mat at your tent door, a dog bed or when wet and kept wet, is good to keep your fish catch in. You can get them from the pet city/farmer jacks type stores. They sell them as dog bedding

Don't know about Victoria but WA has fire restrictions in place - no open fires - Dec 31 to March 31. There may be some exemptions but don't count on it. I'm sure there are similar restrictions in other states, especially parks areas and camping grounds. Best to check.

We have days of total fire bans...not blanket rules. Yesterday and today have been declared total fire ban days (40 plus with wind).
So far, the weekend seems to be a little kinder with the weather - late 20s and early 30s. But I'm keeping my eye on the warnings/bans.

That was a pain in the arse when I was over there last year. Did not use my firewood, so it travelled from Sydney to Perth, and around the south, and back to Sydney. 2 buckets of wood that added weight to the Prado and van.

                              speaking of well travelled firewood...
a couple of years ago before crossing the Simpson Desert, I cut some gidgee and put it on top of the Patrol so that we would have wood before we got to the no collection zone at Mt Dare.
by the time we got to Birdsville it was still there; up the Hay River Track still there; Alice Springs, Uluru, Coober Pedy still there.
Back to Wagga Wagga and still there. The only time it was taken off was at Uluru when I had to take it off the roof and put it in the Tvan so nobody could see it otherwise I would cop a fine! Anyhoo, when we camped that night it came back out and onto the roof for the return home.
As my mate said:"I'd rather be looking at it than for it"
