  • Moving from 3.0 1KD-FTV to 2.8 1GD-FTV Prado 150

I recently took a new model Prado for a drive and left wondering why I would change.

So I'm wonder what the pros and cons are for changing from the old 150 to the 2016 150 (3.0 1KD-FTV to 2.8 1GD-FTV ). No doubt I'm at risk of starting a war, along the lines of why change from the 120 to 150.

    As far as I can see at the moment;
    PROs
    - Quieter
    - New Injectors
    - Better steering?
    - Better gearbox?
    CONs
    - DPF
    - No real world power improvement
    - Two over-drive gears?
    - Can't fit a voltage diode

    Am I missing something?

    Pro:
    No valve clearance check, hydraulic.
    A tad more go!
    It's new, smells nice.

    Con:
    Big$ for very similar truck.
Dpf filter may case you expensive problems as they do with other brands
The 1kd is a known quantity & we have the solutions & preventative solutions.
    1gd is an unknown quantity.

If I was thinking of upgrading I would not do it yet, I would wait until the 2.8 has been around awhile.

Looking back over this forum we can see that there have been problems with the 3.0 over the years that have been fixed by Toyo after we (the mugs) have road tested them.

The 2.8 is right at the start of that refinement cycle, I hope they are a brilliant car and people don't have problems but only time ( and a few off road trips) will tell.

You mean the 2.8 wasn't built with all the knowledge of the issues with the 3.0? What was Toyota thinking.

I assume/hope that the major weakness, the injectors, has been fixed. The V8 also has different injectors.

I notice in the recent gearbox post that both the 5 and new 6 speed autos are designed for around 480NM. Probably another reason that they haven't gone for more torque.

My 3.0 with Steinbauer and muffler is nicer to drive than the 2.8 and extra sound deadening on the firewall and in the guards makes it noticeably quieter.

Do you think the 2.8 would be nicer to drive than the 3.0l with the Steinbauer and muffler mods?

Probably the same as when they built the 150 after all the problems with the 120

Having driven both back to back , no.

That's techies the world over. How else would they ensure a secure working future for themselves if everything worked perfectly and didn't need fixing? My mob relies on the front end to come up with work-arounds for all the tech crap that the back end develops without actually finding out what we need.

I don't know about nicer to drive - but there is definitely a big difference in noise levels
Even my fiancé can pick a 2.8 vs 3.0 coming up the street
Not a big deal really though - never minded the sound of a tractory diesel...

The diesel motor is so gutless it's a joke. Even the Toyota dealer admitted that to me when I bought my new 2016 Prado Kakadu. That's why I bought the 2016 V6. Mind you I guess this is relative to what you have been used to driving. Sure it's a very thirsty motor but this does not concern me as I prefer the power and over taking speed ( I lease my car so fuel is not that much of an issue and I had to use 98 Ron in my previous Lexus so standard unleaded fuel is cheap now by comparison lol). ). I don't know why Toyota cannot produce a diesel like the Jeep Cherokee or Audi which have awesome diesels. My mate's Jeep 3.0 litre diesel is awesome but the rest of the car is falling apart lol! I would love his motor in my Kakadu.
