  • front differential oil drain plug on 120 series 4 litre Prado

Before I went on a 5000km trip in March I decided to change all the gear oils.
All went well until I tried to get the oil drain plug out of the front diff.
This is a 10mm Allen key format.
First tried a long handle allen key, then tried a 10mm allen socket with 300mm bar.
    Then added 1 metre extension.
No luck it is like it is welded in.
Has anyone had this problem and what is the solution to remove the plug without buggering up the plug.

    cheers
    Richard

Mine was stuck and we had to chisel it out. I've replaced mine with a plug with a 24mm hex instead of the 10mm allen hex.

I have read that if you can give it a firm flat strike on the face of the plug with a hammer it can help loosen the thread. Others have resorted to welding a nut onto the plug to remove it.

You know it's one of the real problems.
Quite common, usually due to prior damage & over tightening.

      Moving forward:

I keep new plugs in stock & replace them more often than not.
As tin said give it a smack.

Depending if its stuffed if you can use the special tool.

If not its a chisel job. I use a sharp one to put a grip mark in it, then a blunt one to turn it & not cut it.
I learned you can almost chisel the top away before its out.

I suggest a fresh plug & you could try one of these

In the pic in the ad, that's what they usually end up like.

      Have fun!

        Thanks for that.
Sometimes wonder about the OEM design.
The aftermarket replacement plug is a far better product and lines up with the rest of the drain plugs.

Try hitting the plug with a quick squirt of carby cleaner/brake cleaner or something else that is cold and evaporates a couple of times then try to loosen it, it might just make the plug contract enough for you to crack it. Make sure to try to crack it before the cold conducts into the surrounding metal of the diff.

I think I know what's going on. It's dissapointing because the people miss out on the benefit of that tool.

There is no problem with PP. The links work for me. Suggest you check your PC for malware, adware, viruses, etc.

The link works fine. I've tried it from 4 different computers and phones/ iPad etc.
it is not a problem with or because of this site and most likely a problem with your pc.
