  • Wheel Nut Socket Size

Just wondering what size socket people use to undo their wheel nut?

The reason for asking is that the standard Toyota wheel spanner measures 21mm and most wheel sockets now are metric meaning 21mm would be the size, yet the actual size is 13/16" which is 20.64mm. Being in a mechanical trade, we are taught to use the correct size spanners.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are.

I have a couple of 13/16"s, one in the tool box and one in the shed.

Guess I would only use a 21mm in a pinch and hope for the best...

The sooner we get rid of imperial measurements, the better...
20.64 mm is so close to 21mm that its all a bit academic really. For reference, 0.36mm is equal to the thickness of 4 hairs.

I just tried the 13/16" AF and my 21mm flank drive impact socket. Sticking with 21mm thanks.

13/16'' 6 point sockets are too tight and lock on when your using a rattle gun

21mm 6 point sockets does mark the centre cap though, so pop them off

            Vaughan you are quite correct.
As others have said 13/16 is very tight.
In my 24 years in auto trade it has always been a 21mm impact socket & never had an issue.

There would be so many factors that would make 21mm not 21mm; age and use of socket, wear on the nut itself, brand of socket even. Find what works and use it.
Off topic slightly. Don't ever lose the nuts, ones for the 150 are $8 each!

13/16 Torqued to 83 ft/lbs with the hub cap removed, unlike the lazy sh!ts at the dealer during service.
