Previous main car was with AAMI but opted for all my vehicles to be with RACV as you can choose repairer.

nice price, but isn't RACV / RACQ gazetted roads only?

I just rang RACQ and there may be some confusion..RACQ "road side assistance" has limitations regarding your car being accessible on recognised (gazetted) roads and tracks in order to get breakdown assistance.
However RACQ "comprehensive motor vehicle" insurance covers your car for as long as it is being used legally on-road, off-road, in 4wd parks etc...that's what the RACQ just advised verbally, but I'll get the exact wording from their product disclosure statement...but RACQ comprehensive car insurance, especially if you have a no claim discount and multi-policy discount is very attractive....about $700 per year.. including listed accessories.

Thanks everyone, I ended up going with the quote through my broker, Allianz is the insurer. Their policy covers Australia Wide, no restrictions on 4wd'ing, which I triple checked. I didn't think about ANZ car insurance, I will see how that goes, thanks Hugo for the mention.

Allianz for me too, have never claimed but whenever I add a mod I email them what I've done and they reply with a simple email along the lines of 'Thank you, your suspension lift/brush bars/etc has been added to your policy'.
I like that I have that record to keep in case there's ever a dispute.

            Cheers.

Have heard so many horrible stories from people in the repair industry about them that its not funny!

They will try everything to get out of a claim, and thats on road.
I shudder to think how easy it would be for them to walk away from an offroad crash.....

In regards to the OP, I have used AAMI, RACV, Shannons & Budget Direct - had to claim through RACV, Budget & AAMI through no fault of my own & all were painless and extremely easy!
Although RACV slugged me an extra $100 on my premium when some knob reversed into my car when it was parked across from work & didnt bother to leave details.

AAMI & Shannons have always been exceptional with their telephone service when I had to call and change policy details.

Im currently with Club 4X4 & they have been great to deal with - dont know about their claims process, but their PDS seems pretty solid.
They will even cover mods that authorities deem illegal, unless they contribute to the accident.

Thinking of having a look at Shannons again though after reading posts here as I know they are excellent with covering all mods on modified street machines!!

But dont be afraid to shop around when your renewal comes up.
All companies always have new deals and are constantly changing, I always review insurance every year as there is usually something better out there, or you can hit up your current company to match others!

Youi wanted $300 a year to insure my box trailer, it cost $2500. I could by a new one every 8 years at that rate. RACQ only wanted $50 a year.

I was insured with Budget Direct for 5 yrs until they sent me a renewal letter in the post recently. I saw that they wanted to charge me $1,800 a year ($153 per month) comprehensive insurance for my old car that's only worth $6,000. Gotta be kidding. I phoned Suncorp for a quote and was quoted $425 per year ($35 per month accessories included, windscreen cover and driving 25,000km per year), so I switched in a heart beat. When I phoned Budget Direct to cancel the Indian lady on the phone tried to get me to stay with them. She was able to reduce my policy to $1,700 per year she said. I scoffed at that and then she said she could speak to her manager to see what could be done. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I told her that my wife looks after our finances so unfortunately I hadn't looked at a bank statement in a long time but wish I did years ago because I would've gave them the flick sooner. I said it was disrespectful to do that to their clients and it was obvious they don't respect their clientele enough to want to keep them. I had to tell her 5 or 6 times that I wanted to CANCEL before she respected my wishes and allowed me to.

One more thing too, my hard copy policy renewal notice stated that my policy was to end on 22/12/16. She said her computer said 21/12/16. I let that go through to the keeper without mentioning anything to her.... Because I read in their documentation just before I made the phone call that if I was to cancel before my policy ended for that 12 month period then a cancellation charge of $40 was payable. I believe they'll try their very best to slap this charge on me. I'll check my banking records at that time and if they do (which I believe they will) I'll phone them and make them reverse it. It'll cost them $40 in labour time to fix their dodginess. When she said, "Are you sure you want to cancel on the 21st as I must ask this question?" I said yes, but I've still got them on a technicality that my hard copy says my policy expires on the 22nd, and was due for renewal on the 23rd. I'm positive her system would also say the 22nd. They'd have a recording of the phone conversation for "training purposes" and would also have me on record saying my policy ends on the 22nd, and then her overriding me a short while later by saying it ends on the 21st. They can play me back the phone recording if it comes to that. How f*ckin dodgy. It's just a bit more they'd try and squeeze out of you for leaving them.

Just for the record, this was only my personal experience with them and in no way represents how they would conduct business in general with the rest of their client base. I'm sure their customer service and the way they treat all their other customers is industry leading and second to none. Happy motoring!
